Tropical Fish Aquarium The Beginning

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 07:31

วันพฤหัสบดีที่ 26 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2552

A tropical fish aquarium is a great and relaxing hobby for millions of people around the world. Watching your fish swim in their own environment is like being a part of their world. Like a constant deep sea dive experience.

However, before you go jumping the gun and spending hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on this expensive hobby; it would be prudent to learn the basics of how to take care of your fish and provide them the environment that they need to stay healthy.

  • Equipment you w
    ll need:
  • Aquarium – wash with water only, (do not use any soaps), before filling it!
  • Aquarium gravel - to 1.5 pounds of gravel per gallon of water. Also, be sure to wash your gravel in a strainer or something before putting it in your tank.
  • Aquarium filter
  • Heater – make sure that the heater you use is capable of heating the size of your aqaurium
  • Decorations – (like a sunken Spanish treasure ship!)
  • Testing kit – for testing the water's ph balance and nitrogen content
  • Fish Food
  • Vacuum
  • Fish net
  • Glass scrubber

That's quite a list and it's only the beginners list! As you grow your aquarium and learn more about your new hobby, you'll want to add "extras".

In order to have a successful freshwater tropical fish tank you will have to work at it. Once a week, or at most once every two weeks, you will need to perform some kind of maintenance on the tank. Most of the time you will be performing water changes.

Try to have in mind what kind of fish you're going to want to have in your aquarium because that will determine the size of the tank you'll need. Some fish only grow to be an inch or two, whereas other types of tropical fish can grow 12 or 13 inches or more in length! If this is your first time purchasing an aquarium, it may be a good idea to start with a 10 or 20 gallon aquarium and stock it with some of the smaller and hardier species.

Consider where you are going to place your aquarium. If you put it in front of a window or near a drafty door, you'll have problems maintaining the temperature of your tank. Try to find a place away from these problem areas.

Once you have everything set up, decorations, water filtrations system, heater and your tank filled; wait. You need to wait several days for your aquarium to have completely filtered and processed the water in the tank. Once that occurs – you're ready to add some life to your tank.

Add only 1-2 fish to your tank at a time. Allow the bag of fish to float in the tank for about 15 minutes to the fish can get acclimated to the temperature of their new home. Then add a little of the tank water to the bag in order for your fish to get used to the ph of the aquarium. Afer another 10 minutes or so , you can release your fish into their new home. Don't feed them on this first day as they will most likely be stressed and they just need to get used to the new environment.

You now have a live working aquarium and it only needs regular maintenance for you to be able to enjoy it year round.

Kitty Time Training Your New Kitten

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 07:31

So you are now the proud owner of a brand spankin new kitty! It's one tiny purring ball of fur with a little pink nose attached to it – and a whirling fluff of a tail!

When a kitten is born they can't see or hear. They can taste and smell and definitely know where the food is! Like human babies, they mostly just sleep and eat. At around 2 weeks of age their sight and hearing begins to "come in" and they are now ready to do a little bit of exploring. This is when momma starts to earn her keep! The best
ituation for mom is having her litter in an enclosed space, otherwise she is spending way to much time gathering her wandering flock!

Before we start training our cats to do something or to stop doing something, we need to look at how cats learn. They don't understand English, they can't read books or attend lectures. They learn by experience. If the experience is good, they will try to repeat it. If the experience is unpleasant, they will try to avoid it in the future. They enjoy raking the furniture with their claws, so they continue to do it. But it's quite a shock when they stick their nose in a candle flame, so they won't do that again.

The key to training is to make sure that whatever you want your cat to do is exceedingly rewarding and pleasurable. Whatever you don't want your cat to indulge in must never be rewarding or fun, in fact, it must be unpleasant.

What happens when your cat pounces on your feet when you're trying to sleep? How often do you think it's cute and play with him for just a little while? Folks – that's just what your adorable kitty wanted! You're rewarding your cat for waking you up and playing with your feet! Until you stop rewarding him and actually make it an unpleasant experience "Fluffy" will just keep on waking you up at 5AM.

Cats are nocturnal animals so it is perfectly normal for them to want to play when you want to sleep. You need to switch your cats sleeping habits. Gently wake him up when you see him sleeping in the sun. Get down on the floor and play with him. Get him up and running after his favorite toy. Do this especially early in the evening. You want him nice and tired when you go to bed. After a few weeks , you'll gradually start to see a change and Fluffy will start to sleep at night and be alert and ready for mischief during the day instead!

Puppy Time Training Your New Puppy

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 07:27

So you are now the proud owner of a brand spankin new puppy! He probably the cutest "thing" on God's green earth, right? Just one small bundle or wrigglin, lickin, excited PUPPY!

When a puppy is born they can't see or hear. They can taste and smell and definitely know where the food is! Like human babies, they mostly just sleep and eat. At around 2 weeks of age their sight and hearing begins to "come in" and they are now ready to do a little bit of exploring. This is when momma starts to earn her keep!
he best situation for mom is having her litter in an enclosed space, otherwise she is spending way to much time gathering her wandering flock!

Until a puppy is about one and a half months old they rely on their instincts. When they hear a loud noise their natural reaction in the wild would be to drop to the ground – crouch low so that they can stay hidden – they may tremble because, naturally, they are afraid of this unknown loud sound – but it's a normal reaction. Remember at one and a half months their eyesight is still not completely developed - keep that in mind. Even humans are startled by loud sounds that they can't quite identify!

From about one and a half months to four months you will want to start teaching your puppy some basic commands.

His name: Call him by his name! Simple ey? Here Rover, not here, "puppy" or "baby" or "cutie"! Just "here, Rover" Consistently! I'm reminded of an old Bill Cosby joke where he tells the story of him thinking that he's name was "Dammit" because his father would always walk into a room and say something like "Dammit, what have you done now!"( OK – so I've let my age slip a bit there!) Regardless, just like with your children, consistency is the key. Consistency, consistency consistency!

Come: Keep it low key and calm. Your puppy will react instinctively to harsh and loud commands: ie he will tremble and crouch. You don't want a fearful dog, yet you don't want your dog to be disobedient either. Again, consistency is the key. Using a leash and a gentle tug and a "come" should do the trick. ALWAYS use the same word or short phrase. You don't want to confuse your puppy by using multiple phrases so always stick with the same one or two word command.

Stay: Put the puppy in place and walk away while saying "stay". Repeat, repeat, repeat! Don't expect too much from your puppy and don't try to teach them both 'come and stay' in the same session. Let them learn one command before moving on to the next.

Be sure to use lots of praise when your puppy does as you ask too! Keep the lessons short , but fun. Their attention span will not be very long and there are a lot of distractions when they are out of their crate. All sorts of wonderful things to explore and get into!

Canadian Lynx. Simply a Magnificent Animal You Probably Will Never Meet.

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 20:08

วันศุกร์ที่ 20 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2552

The secretive Canadian Lynx is a beautiful animal. Seldom seen. Feeds on snowshoe hare almost exclusively. But has a very strange behavior which an observer may seem baffling. If you ever have the opportunity to meet one up close and personal you will see mother nature at it's best.

The canadian Lynx is one animal that is perfectly designed for the job of feeding itself. Not all animals are so lucky, but the lynx is.

It has one major problem that it cannot control. That problem is food. You see, the snowshoe
are population collapses every ten years. Its natures method of controlling the population. Because the hares do what hares do best the forest becomes saturated with the little bunnies so a large percentage of the population die off and of course, there goes supper for the lynx.

The lynx population fluctuates up and down in concert with the hares. Not all lynx eat hares exclusively. Some will eat mice, squirrels, birds and deer.

If you ever see a snowshoe hare in winter with its fur covered paws spread wide on soft snow and running at full speed you may wonder how any animal could catch it. Similarly if you ever see a lynx chasing it you will wonder how any hare could ever escape being caught. Both are beautifully adapted for winter pursuit. Advantage goes to the lynx because it has long hind legs perfectly designed for speed. The paws are huge for the animals size and are covered with fur to allow it to speed over thick snow as if on bare ground.

The lynx mainly hunts at night. Since they live in isolation and they are chiefly active at night , they are seldom seen in the wild. Another reason they are tough to find is that they patrol large territories.

It has been my good luck to have encountered a few Canadian Lynx in the wild. They are very beautiful animals with amazing fur coats that are a very pale grey/white in winter and tawny brown in summer. I stood not 15 feet from one animal while it looked me over for a few minutes before quietly striding away. I saw another that had been caught by a paw in a snare. It was released by a conversation officer while it remained quite but was held down by a pole. Once it was released it remained where it was for a couple of minutes and then very slowly walked away stopping every few steps to turn and observe us. No speedy retreat as you might expect. They just do not panic.

The mountains surrounding Whistler have a good population of the incredibly beautiful Canadian Lynx. Keep your eyes wide open and you might just see one of natures wonderful creatures.

Getting caught brown-handed holding the bag?

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 07:47

Port-A-Poo dog poop bag carrier product is a new hands free sanitary solution to carrying your dogs waste while on a walk. Simply connect it to your leash, flip open the latch and lay your used poop bag across the teeth and snap it shut. No more holding your dogs poop while on a walk.

While walking my dogs I always carry dog poop bags with me. I stuff them into my pockets with all my other dog walking products. I have to be careful not to put them in the pocket with my keys though. I did that once and one of th
keys ripped a hole right through one of the poop bags. Also, when I have to clean up after Mikey or Lucy and have a full one, it's a bit uncomfortable to have to hold onto it until I find a trash can.

I recently tried out a little dog product device that makes carrying the empty as well as the full poop bags really easy and convenient. It's called a Port-A-Poo and it's a handy little pet gadget that screws onto the leash. Don't worry...it won't harm the leash at all. With just a flip of a latch, it holds on snugly to a couple empty dog poop bags. Then, when Mikey or Lucy decide I should put something in one of the bags, I can use the Port-A-Poo to hold it until I find a trash can.

This is really a pretty clever little invention! It took me about 2 minutes to attach it to Lucy's leash. I just had to fiddle with a few screws and there it was - it fit snugly. (and it's even pink to match her leash!) The Port-A-Poo is really lightweight (about an ounce). Even so, I was expecting it to weigh down the leash, but that's not the case. I hardly knew it was there until I had to use it to carry a full bag.

Whether you're a professional dog walker or you just walk your own dog, this might be something to take a closer look at. It sure does help get that bag of poop out of your hand until you can toss it in the trash! It comes in purple, red, pink, black , and royal blue and can be purchased online from Port-A-Poo.

How to Train a Dog to Fetch

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 22:25

Having a dog can be a fun and rewarding experience. There are many fun activities you can do with your dog to grow upon the enjoyment that you both have. This How To article describes the process of training a dog to fetch. These steps can be used to train a dog to do other tricks also.

Having a dog can be a fun and rewarding experience. There are many fun activities you can do with your dog to grow upon the enjoyment that you both have. One of the most popular games to play with a dog is fetch. This simple game of retrieving
ball or some other item can lead to hours of fun. There is one catch to this simple game, you have to train your dog to be able to fetch. Do not worry; this is not as hard as it may seem at first glance. With a little persistence and work on your part, your dog will be playing fetch before you know it.

THE FOUNDATION

Your dog will naturally be drawn to running after a ball that is thrown. This is a natural instinct that you have probably seen many times in your dog. This is one of the most elementary things that your dog needs to be able to do to play fetch. If you have never seen your dog do this, grab a ball and throw it to see if he runs after it. Most dogs will run after the ball, grab it, and then start towards you. The reason that this is not fetching a ball is that they usually stop and start playing with the ball. Once your comfortable with this, you can move onto the training aspect of getting your dog to fetch.

TRAINING

You will need to have two balls to make this training work. It is important that your dog is interested in these balls. There are dogs that will chase any ball that you throw. There are other dogs that are picky in what they chase. Know which group that your dog falls into.

Throw one of the balls and let your dog chase after it. Keep the other ball that you have hidden. It is important that your dog is focused on the ball that you have throw.

As your dog runs toward you, choose a point near you to tell your dog to drop the ball. You will want to give this command in a stern but friendly voice. Make sure that the point that you choose to do this with your dog is close enough to be your dog giving you the ball. Odds are that your dog will not do this on the first try.

If your dog does not drop the ball, take out the second ball. Ignore your dog and start playing with it. Act like the ball that you have is the most interesting thing that you have ever played with. This will cause your dog to drop the ball that he brought to you and want the one that you have.

Throw the second ball so that your dog has to run and get it. Place the first ball into your pocket so that your dog does not see it. Repeat the command to drop when your dog comes to you with the second ball. If your dog does not drop, repeat this process over and over again until your dog brings you and drops the ball on your command. Reward with a treat as your dog is learning and when he completes the task on command. It will take some time for your dog to get comfortable with playing fetch with you. It may even take a few training sessions.

In the end , your dog will enjoy playing fetch with you and be happy that you spent so much time with him.

How Training Dog Collars Can Be Counterproductive Sometimes

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 22:25

If you're not a professional dog trainer, you might confuse control with dog training. It's not the same thing. When you pair a human with a dog, the human will always want to have the control. That's usually OK, unless the human over does it, abusing the control he has over the dog.

You can get that control with dogs by using dog training collars. The intention behind it is a good one. By using it you can remove the dog behaviors that you don't want him to have. But
even with a good intention, the training process can be abusive or done incorrectly sometimes.

Something that most people forget is that dogs have their own individualities. While some can give you joy and comfort, others can be hard to control or aggressive, or they can refuse going through training because they're more laid back. In some cases they will learn slow, in others they will learn fast.

You can use training collars to control dogs better, but some people don't respect the basic ways on how they can use them. The first tools of this type that were made to control dogs better were chain or choke collars.

Plenty of dog owners either misuse or overuse choke collars, and if they're not careful they can hurt the dogs. Dogs can choke to death or get neck damages if the owners are too harsh with these collars. It's both counter-productive and dangerous using such collars.

In other cases, owners don't know enough about how to use a collar with their dogs. A lot of people buy electronic dog collars, which will allow them to train their dogs at all times. These collars come with remote access, which allows for training even if the handler is not present. It might be a popular choice these days, but people don't understand what disadvantages this method has.

The reasons why collars can be counterproductive are not out of the ordinary. Sometimes, people don't bother to see if the collar fits correctly. If it doesn't fit right, collars can cause burning spots by pinching the skin of the dog.

Skin irritations can be as annoying for dogs as they would be for humans. If you want your dog to have a collar that fits well, you should choose one that keeps a few inches free between the neck and the collar.

There is another possible reason why it can be counterproductive to use dog collars. Their basic principle is fear and pain. For example, an electronic training collar can prevent a dog from barking by send unpleasant sounds, or it can send electric shocks to the dog.

Even if the collar has the desired effect and the dog stops barking, it will also make him lose confidence, so it's not that great.
It might be tempting to use collars to quickly modify the behavior of the dog, but the ultimate result is not actual training , but dependence on the tool. The dog doesn't truly learn this way.

Therapy Dog Training – The Benefits of a Visiting Dog

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 22:25

In some cases, people need a lot more attention, love and support than normal. This happens especially when they are sick. But, the unfortunate truth is that people generally don't have the patience or time to help these sick people. This is where dog therapy training comes in play, teaching dogs how to help these people and keep them company, giving them the emotional support that they need.

Besides normal dog training, these dogs also need specialized teaching. They will learn how to behave around peopl
that are going through therapy and how to provide them with comfort. If they need to provide this help to ill people, these dogs need much more than just a basic training. They will need to be able to do a number of things while being good companions.

Older people and kids are usually those that get therapy dogs to help them deal with their stay in hospitals. Both the dog and the handler will help the patient go through this hard period, by offering him activities and attention that will help.

Hospitals aren't the only places that can benefit from using therapy dogs on their patients. They can also provide great value in retirement homes, schools, nursing homes or mental institutions.

The training that is done on dogs that will be used for therapy derives from other types of trainings and modified, to make them fit the situations that can happen in a hospital. They will be taught to be nice with strangers and to enjoy sitting in their presence. In most cases, these therapy dogs will learn performances and tricks that most people will enjoy seeing.

You could use almost any breed to make a therapy dog, but in most cases breeds with higher temperance are chosen, due to their constant work with people they don't know.

There isn't one single method of training these dogs, but usually they will need to be certified before being allowed to get near patients to help them. Training and certification can be received from animal shelters or therapy dog training classes. Once the certification is received, you can start training the dog for therapy.

With a therapy training, the dog will learn to ignore noise, people that don't need therapy or any kind of hospital equipment. They also learn to do a few basic things or to help the patients do it. They are not service dogs though, so they can't do the same things.

These dogs are trained to help people by visiting them and giving them some company and joy. They are not trained to stay with them and help them with their tasks, so there is a major difference between therapy and service dogs.

People often need some therapy to recover, which can prove boring and repetitive. A therapy dog can provide some excitement in their daily routine that will improve their situation. It's been known to make people less lonely or depressed as well. It can distract them from darker thoughts that they might have.

A therapy dog can also make patients be more responsive, getting them out of their routine, making them less passive. Try to put yourself in the place of a bored patient, that suffers from pain, and imagine what a joy would a dog bring you, if he came to interrupt your boring routine.

There isn't a huge demand for therapy dog training , but it's been used for quite some time now in the treatment of patients.

How to Start Training a Dog for Agility

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 19:17

วันอาทิตย์ที่ 15 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2552

You should start training your dog for agility while he is a puppy. But, it's possible to do it even if the dog is older. Getting your dog started with training should be done once you know if he isn't too old for it.

Knowing the age of the dog isn't enough to decide if he is too old. If he is still able to do it, the training age can vary from one breed to another. It depends on what his natural tendencies are, so there isn't one single age that you can use to decide on this matter.

But, ev
n if older dogs can be trained, the process is much easier if the dog is still young. That's because he hasn't developed the habits and they aren't yet rooted in him.

If you do need to train an older dog, don't go into it thinking that he can't learn anything. Both the trainer and the dog should go into it fully committed. If the owner is patient enough and dedicated to agility training, the dog will learn much faster.

You can pick one of several methods to start the agility training. Some of them are presented below:

Physical exercise

Physical exercises should be the first things when starting agility training. If the trainer is interested in training the dog properly, age should be of no importance as long as the dog's condition is good. You can do some basic exercises with him, like hopping or jumping, to make him move a bit. If the dog is still a puppy, he can exercise much easier, because of the extra energy he has.

Allow him to play around

Just like you would teach a kid, if you make an exercise appear like a game, he's more likely to learn whatever you want to teach him. Puppies can generally go through chutes and tunnels, so you can easily introduce obstacles and tunnels into the exercise. You can turn the training area into a play ground where he can learn and have fun at the same time.

The puppy will be better prepared for agility training if you use this method to prepare him for what comes next.

Encourage his agility

If the training area is too small to put up obstacle courses, you can still use a number of different games to make him more agile. The training can be improved by using improvised walls and tunnels.

Keep it short

While dogs aren't as enthusiast as people about doing different activities, they do want to please their masters. You can't get them to continue the training if you don't give him a reason to like it. You can encourage him by giving him treats, patting him or praising, which should keep his attention to the exercise. Still, you shouldn't do very long training sessions.

One good rule to follow when you want to do agility training is not to do long lessons. It's better to keep them short. You can't teach him everything in only one lesson, so keep the training sessions short. This way he can understand everything without being overwhelmed with information. One tip is to finish each exercise with a praise, so always end it when he does something right.

It doesn't matter how young or old the dog is if the objective is agility training. It's all about how well he responds , if he wants to obey your commands or how willing he is to work on his own. It also matters if the trainer has enough patience with him.

How To Use Dog Training Treats To Make Him Learn

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 04:27

วันเสาร์ที่ 14 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2552

There are a number of methods that you can use to do dog training. Some ways need for the dog's owner to be able to use harmful treatments, while other methods ask for their patience and commitment. If you want to train a dog in the safest and most reasonable way, you should use treats, just like the professionals say you should.

You can use the treats to give him either punishments or rewards, so that he can learn his lesson. If he follows the command correctly or he behaves like he should, you can give
im a treat, so he knows that he did the right thing. If he doesn't follow the command or doesn't behave like he should, you can refuse him the treat, and that would be the punishment. Keep using punishments and rewards until he learns to do the right thing so he can get his treat.

Uses
There are a number of uses that dog treats can be used for:
• Teach the dog to do what he is ordered, so he can get his treat.
• Encourage him to be obedient to you, to have an active attitude and to be interested in the treat he will get if he behaves as he should.
• Besides giving him treats, you can also praise him when he does well, which makes the training process easier.
• It can be a representation of the fact that he pleased you with his actions.
• Dog treats will work usually for dogs, even if praising doesn't do much.

When to offer them treats

If you want to use dog training treats, you should give it to them right after he executes a command correctly or behaves the way he should be. Treats and praises should be automatically connected to the way he behaves. Giving him too many treats can make him dependent on getting them.

Treats should be used only during the initial training phase, when he is learning. If he's not training, you shouldn't give him the same treats that he receives when he learns.

If you're looking to make him learn a command like "down", the treat you're giving him should be put on his nose, and brought down, as well as telling him the "down" command at the same time.

If he executes the command as he should, you can reward him with the treat, and also encourage him with words or with a pat. Keep doing the same thing until he knows when he gets the treat and what he needs to do in order to receive it.

In time, as he learns more, you can use patting and praising instead of dog treats. In training, the goal is to teach him to do as you order him. You can still give him dog treats from time to time, but it would be better to keep them hidden, since he should follow orders even if you don't have a treat with you.

Types

There are dog training treats that are simple, just like cookies, which you can use to reward the dog. You can even use treats that help his digestion, boost his health or cleans the dog's teeth.

Buying dog treats

You can buy the dog treats from groceries, food stores, pet shops, specialty stores or even online. The price of dog treats can vary, from $5 to $30. Since their prices can be considerable, you can also find discounts, if you buy in bulk.

Another option would be to prepare it yourself, at home , using books or recipes found online.

Teach a dog to stay

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 04:27

This article shows you how to train your dog to remain in one position for certain duration. Considering the fact that dogs are energetic and tend to get easily distracted, this command is a little harder to train the dogs in. But with the pointers given here, you should be able to train your dog to stay without any issue whatsoever. To know more, read the article!

Getting your dog to stay is not as easy as it seems, for one; your dog is more prone to follow you around than to stand still in one position. Most dogs are
nquisitive, curious about their surroundings and tend to get distracted a lot. As you can see, getting them to stay in one position is a little difficult, especially if your dog happens to be a pup. Dogs are easily distracted and that goes double for puppies. That said, it is quite possible to teach them to stay in one position, as long as you follow a structured method while training them to do so. Here are a few pointers to help you get started; you can probably find some of these pointers covered in the secrets of a professional dog trainer

  • Heel to stay – the best way to get your dog to stay in one position is preferably from the heel position. Once your dog is trained to heel, training him to stay is not that difficult. Imagine yourself walking in the heel position with your dog and now the only thing that you would have to do is to get him to sit. Just press his nose down [gently] so that he sits down. Now walk a few steps ahead and 'before' he gets up, reward him and use positive reinforcement. The idea is to get your dog to realize the value of staying in one position.
  • The stay command – Start verbalizing the command right away, follow the directions in step 1 and verbalize the command 'stay', so that your dog associates this command with the 'still' position. Now that your dog can connect the command with the 'stay' position, start increasing the distance gradually. As you do so, see how long it takes for your dog to start moving, if he manages to sit still in the same position for more than 4 minutes, well he has got it.
  • The stand with the stay – This position is slightly harder than the 'sit stay' but you should be able to train your dog to stand still with little difficulty, just follow the same directions as you did for the 'sit stay' position. The 'stand stay' position is slightly harder for most dogs to get as they are energetic by nature. So it is a 'tad' difficult for them to stand still but with the steps given here, you should be able to do just that.
  • It is important to remember to reward your dog with a doggy treat every time he manages to perform correctly. Once he has got the trick down pat, start phasing out the treats slowly. Soon, he will obey the verbal command without the need for any incentive. With these pointers from the secrets of a professional dog trainer , you should be able to get your dog to stay in the stand/sit position for about three minutes and over.

Pros and Cons of Wire General Cage Dog Crates

    เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 04:27

General Cage dog crates have been around for a long time, since before the pet industry became big business. They started by making wire dog crates, and though their market has expanded, wire crates are still the core of what they do. We have a wire crate, and love it, but is it the best option for you and your dog? Take a look as the pros and cons of using a wire dog kennel.

In 1964 there was a manufacturing company in Indiana called Monticello Manufacturing, they made square, wire
esh trash burners. One of their customers was using and selling these as a cage to hold puppies. Now, unlike today, the pet trade was practically nonexistent. But, as a forward thinking company, they saw the opportunity and formed a spin off company called General Cage and started making wire dog crates. In the last 40 years, their product line has expanded, but lets take a detailed look at the pros and cons of the original wire General Cage dog crates.

    Benefits of wire dog crates:

    • They allow your dog to see what is going on around them. This can either qualify as a pro or a con, depending on your dog. Your dog may normally have the run of the house, but sometimes he needs to be put in his crate. A wire General Cage dog crate allows your dog to feel more like a part of what is going on in your home because he can see what is going on around him.
    • Wire crates are well ventilated, this can be especially important if you live in a warmer climate or if your dog has a longer coat. It allows plenty of air flow for your dog to stay cool.
    • Wire crates are collapsable for easy storage, and can be broken down quickly and conveniently.
    • They are easy to clean with their slide out tray. If your puppy does have an accident, the wire bottom keeps your puppy out of his mess. Being well ventilated, General cage dog crates allow any obnoxious odors to escape.
    • One of the things that I really like about our wire dog crate is that it has two doors, one on the side and one on the front. Mostly we use the front door, but there have been times when traveling when only the side door has been accessible.
    • Last, many , is that a crate trained dog makes for a happier dog and dog owner!

Some Luxury Dog Houses Are Nicer Than My House!

    เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 04:27

Did you know that you can buy luxury dog houses that have lights, running water, heat and central air? Wow! Keeping Fido comfy is a big deal, plus a lot of fun. Dog houses have sure come a long way from the basic dog house design that my dog calls home. If I treat him nice, he might even invite me over to his place sometime.

Dog houses come in all shapes and sizes, just like the dogs who inhabit them. At first flush you might think that dog houses are just so bla, bla, bla, right?
ut I'm here to tell you, they're not. Yeah, there are some really basic ones, but there are also luxury dog houses that most dogs only dream of living in. But lets slow down just a bit and start with some fundamentals before we get into all that. Did you ever take time to think about what role the dog house has in your own life? And no, I'm not talking about whether you have to sleep there or not. That's between you and your significant other to work out. I'm talking about your memories and associations with dog houses. Here, let me show you what I mean.

When I think about dog houses I can't help but feel a little nostalgic. It's a tug of sentiment for my own childhood I'm sure. I have positive associations with the dog houses I remember from when I was a kid. I can't help but think of things like: The Little Rascals, Norman Rockwell paintings, pulling my small red wagon with my pooch dutifully on board (attentive to all as we moved along as if nothing in the world could be more important than what we were doing right then), and, of course, Pluto and Snoopy. Now those two had great adventures around, in, and even on, their dog houses. Theirs weren't luxury dog houses by any means, and neither was my dog's. Theirs were just basic four wall dog houses with a cutout door in the front, a sloped gable roof and maybe a name painted above the entrance. But as I mentioned earlier, there's quite a difference between these and some of the luxury dog houses out there. Consider this.

Did you know that you can actually get a dog house that has running water, heat and central air? I know! And the exterior design options are endless. You know those home plans books with all the little drawings of home plans? That's basically what's available now in luxury dog houses; pretty much anything you want. There are even some with actual furniture like couches and beds in them. The list of amenities goes on and on: indoor and outdoor lighting, stone facades, dining tables (with cutouts for food and water bowls), windows, bath tubs, welcome mats, insulated walls, multiple rooms, and of course, all beautifully landscaped. The super luxury dog houses are huge; big enough for you to go visit your dog at their place! I'm not sure who is buying these things, but it's nice to know there are dogs out there living the life of luxury.

As for me and my dog, we like living together, most of the time. Don't get me wrong, I think , and he certainly doesn't join the family for dinner at the table!

The Secrets You Wish Steve Irwin Had Told You About Pets Cages

    เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 03:49

    วันศุกร์ที่ 13 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2552

Do you really need to advice of a superstar naturalist to help you decide how and when to cage your pet? Just in case one isn't available, here's all you need to know about pets cages.

Ok, if Steve Irwin had offered you advice about pets cages, what do you think it would have been? In the first instance, I think he would have told you to consider the specific animal, because they all have different characteristics and they all have different requirements.

Obviously a pets cage needs to fit in your house ok, so that alw
ys needs to be a consideration. By the same token though, the animal the pets cage houses also needs to be comfortable as well. Beyond the aspects of comfort, the animal needs to have enough to keep it occupied. Some animals need more stimulus than others, but the critical think hear is understanding. Do some research before you get the pet and find out what it's ideal requirements are, then go from there.

You might have restrictions on room perhaps, but that doesn't mean that you cannot use some imagination to make the pets habitat as interesting as possible. Some animals like to run around a lot, so exercise facilities would be great. Others are just plain inquisitive and like to chew and gnaw, so their requirements would be a little different. Remember that chewing animals sometimes need to be protected from themselves, so make sure that whatever they do chew is safe for them.

You also want to ensure that your pets are prevented from escaping. Fun though it might be for them initially, they are in peril if people do not realise that they are out and about. Sometimes, smaller pets can have more than one in a cage. So how many should you have? It depends on the size of the cage of course, but the answer again is to do some research and find out what the animal's requirements are.

I have heard, for example, that you can access software that tells you how many rats you should house per square foot! I expect that if you looked hard enough, you could find similar assistance for other creatures. Don't forget cleaning either. Pets cages will need rigorous cleaning , so please make sure that the cage you get is up to rough treatment from you as well as the animal in question.

    Obedience training tips

    เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 03:48

This article provides you with some of the basic obedience training tips that you can use to train your dog in. If you are on the lookout for some obedience methods that are easy to replicate, then this is it. To know more, read the article!

When it comes to obedience training, I am sure that some of you have given it a miss altogether while others, pamper their pets to the point of 'being nuts'. Obedience training is a must and one that you need to train your dog in early on. This training will help your dog to relate
etter to you, to its immediate environment and understand the difference between right and wrong. It is essential that your dog understands the basic rules and what not to do, for without this, you may well end up with a dog that has something more than a chip on his shoulder. From toilet training to biting others, there are quite a few issues to deal with here. I have taken the liberty of going through Adam G. Katz methods in dog training and have listed out a few obedience training tips here to help you train your dog effectively.

  • Digging all the way to China – I am sure that you must have heard numerous complaints from your immediate neighbors regarding your dog digging in their 'azalea bushes'. The only thing that you can do here is to provide your dog with tons of fun exercise to do so that he has little energy to spend digging up your neighbor's yard. Digging is something that comes natural to a dog, so there is not much you can do to prevent it altogether. But by proving him with lots of walks, runs and more exercises to do, you can limit this particular behavior and in time, with a bit of luck, get rid of it altogether.
  • Barking mad – Dogs bark, there is not much you can do to change that. But some dogs bark a bit excessively, more so than others, even for something as mundane as the door bell. Dogs tend to bark for a lot of reasons, from indicating a stranger's presence to the fact that you are not paying any attention to him. If your dog barks too excessively, then you need to make him understand the command 'quiet' or just get him to 'sit'. Dogs do not bark much when they are in this position so use it to your advantage. Reward him if he is quiet for a while and in time, he will understand the command 'quiet'.
  • Interior decoration – Some dogs tend to go on a 'interior decoration' binge, so if you are not keen to let your drawing room undergo any radical alteration at the hands of your dog, you need to read this. Your dog could be undergoing teething issues and is seeking a way to relieve that irritation in his gums. You can deal with this by getting him some chew toys. There are times when he tends to chew the furniture especially when he feels lonely, you can deal with this by spending more quality time with him.
  • These are some of the obedience tips that you can use to effectively train your dog. Just remember that there will be times when your dog may make you see red. Beating him will not work and is actually unkind, so resist that impulse and with a bit of patience, you can get to stop an 'encore' from taking place. With the help of the Adam G. Katz methods , you should be able to do just that.

trick is not a difficult one to train your dog in, as long as you are able to do it the 'right way'. Sure, I understand that with many websites offering their unique take on 'how to teach a dog to shake', you are bound to be a little confused. So take a moment to go through the pointers listed below and I am sure that you would be able to shake hands with your dog with ease. As these pointers have been compiled from the secrets of a professional dog trainer, they are bound to be invaluable to you. So do review the lot and you should be able to 'high five' your dog in no time at all.

  • Sit for the lesson – The best way to train your dog to shake hands is to get him to sit still for the lesson, as it works best that way. A dog in the 'sit' position would pay more attention to you than one that remains standing up and furthermore, a dog standing up is not going to be all that keen to balance itself on three paws with the remaining one being offered to you. So get your dog to sit down first and start the lesson.
  • Grab the paw – The best way to proceed here is to scoop up the paw, hold it gently and shake it. At the end, offer a treat to your dog as a reward. You can do this or better yet, hide a treat in your hand and with your hand closed hold it in front of his nose. He will lift his paw and start pawing your hand, at which, grasp his paw and shake it with the treat being offered at the end of the shake.
  • Repeat the process – There are any numbers of ways through which you can get your dog to shake hands. But whichever method you use, remember to repeat the step again and again, so that your dog is able to get the trick. Do use positive reinforcement as an additional training tool as it will help your dog to comprehend the session better.
  • Verbalize the step – Now that you have got your dog to paw/shake hands with you, the only thing left for you to do is to verbalize the step with the command 'shake'. Resume training your dog but with the verbal command 'shake' and repeat the earlier steps. He should be able to shake hands with you or with anybody else at the sound of the command 'name shake' [replace name with your dog's name].
  • This trick is a great trick to teach your dog and the best part is that it is not as time consuming as the other tricks tend to be. With the help of the list compiled from the secrets of a professional dog trainer, you should be able to 'high five' your dog in little time as possible. Once you have managed to train your dog to shake hands, you can try out a few additional tricks, such as shaking hands with an alternative paw and even lifting the paw to cover the eyes. Either way , this trick should allow you to have tons of fun with your dog!

How to teach a dog to fetch

    เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 20:10

Dogs get easily distracted; try holding your dog's attention for more than a minute, you will know what I mean. Either way, if you are on the lookout for an easy step by step process by which you can teach your dog to 'fetch', then you need to read this article. This article provides you with all the info you need to train your dog to play 'fetch' with you and to know more, read the article!

Teaching your dog to retrieve is a bit tricky but a great trick to teach your dog. All dogs are energetic and love to run around,
given that I am sure that your pet would love to play this game with you anytime of the day. But getting him to understand the rules of the game and learning to play ball with you will take some time, patience and effort on your part. Just remember to use positive reinforcement during your training process and you should be able to play 'fetch' with your dog in a short amount of time. Here are a few pointers from the secrets of a professional dog trainer that should get you started. You can start to teach your dog to play fetch in very easy steps; the hard part lies in the 'being patient' bit.

  • Start with chewies – Before you start training your dog to play fetch, make sure that the room contains no distractions, as dogs tend to get easily distracted. Now, try training your dog to play fetch by throwing out his favorite chew toy within your reach and see what happens. Given that dogs are naturally curious, he will follow the toy and start to chew on it. Grab the toy and if your dog does not want to let go, dangle a 'doggy treat' in front of his nose and he will let go right away. Remember to say 'good dog' or 'thanks' when he does that. Repeat the same step again and again, in due course; he will make the connection between retrieving the toy and the doggy treat.
  • Repetition makes perfect - Remember to use positive reinforcement every time your dog performs correctly, by petting him and feeding him treats. Now try word associations, like 'fetch' every time you throw out the toy and feed him a treat when he does it correctly. Chances are high that your dog will get distracted the first few times you try out this game but that's the norm. Just remember to reinforce the training every time by petting him and feeding him treats.
  • Change the location – It is a good idea to try out this game in different areas of your house to start with. Once he starts to retrieve the toy on hearing the word 'fetch', you are set to try out this game in an outside location. Dog parks come with any number of distractions for your dog, from trees to other dog's butt. So the first few times he will be distracted. But in due course, he will learn to 'fetch' the ball or toy on command and will deliver it to you without any stopovers in-between. Do not reward your dog when he does not perform correctly as this would only lead to a case of the 'wires getting crossed'. After a certain amount of time, you can start phasing out the treats altogether.
  • You will find that your dog loves to 'fetch' the ball at your command; the best part is that your dog gets a healthy bout of exercise while playing this game. Using these easy steps from the secrets of a professional dog trainer , you should be able to play 'fetch' with your dog in a short amount of time. Happy fetching!

    Biggest dog obedience problems

    เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 20:10

This article provides you pointers to help you deal with some of the biggest obedience problems that you are bound to come across. With the pointers provided here, you should not have much difficulty in dealing with this issue. To know more, read on!

Dogs tend to act out every now and then, I am sure that you have already gone through the initial 'bad behavior' phase with your pup. Every dog tends to go through this phase especially as your home is still a new environment to them. But this will change as your pup adapts
to the new home, this is the stage where you need to keep your eyes open for any behavioral issues, from teething to downright disobedience. Your pup may not listen to your commands, at least not as much as you would like him to. This is mainly due to the fact that your pup cannot get where you are coming from. Basically, it means that you guys need to spend more 'quality' time with each other. However, if your dog does not listen to you even after spending all that time together, then it is an issue that you need to deal with 'hands on'. Here are a few pointers from the Adam G. Katz methods of dog training, which should help you tackle this problem head on.

  • Master and the servant – Dogs tend to think that they rule the roost, so do not be shocked if you find out that your dog thinks that he is the master of you. You need to show your dog that you are the master, the alpha and that he needs to follow you about than the other way about. So when leaving your home, head out first and allow your dog to follow you later. Alpha males are the ones who leave first so by heading out first, you are sending a clear message to your dog that you are the master. If you do not impress this on your dog early on, you will find yourself dealing with a host of behavioral issues.
  • Set the rules – Dogs will misbehave from time to time, so you will need to deal with this issue by making the rules aptly clear to your dog. These rules have to be very clear so that your dog can understand the lot; you can incorporate these rules as a part of your training session. Be firm when dealing with misbehavior, no amount of baby talk is going to make your dog see reason. You will need to set the rules out in black and white for your dog and you can use the 'reward initiative' to train the dog to behave as per the rules of the house.
  • The teeth in the grist – All pups undergo teething problems, so you need to make sure that your pup does not take to biting the life out of your Persian carpet or for that matter, the neighbor's cat. So get him some chew toys to chew about and this should help relieve some of the pain originating from his gums. For a more detailed take on teething problems, consult your dog's vet.
  • Marking the territory – Dogs do mark their territory, just as some of the other animals from the animal kingdom do. The problem is not apparent when they go about marking their territory out in your garden but when they start performing out in your dining room, well that's another matter altogether. You need to make sure that such behavior is a no-no and in time, your dog will get the message across loud and clear. Do remember, that dogs generally mark their territory only if they feel that they are threatened in some form, especially by another dog.
  • These pointers should help you deal with some of the biggest obedience problems that you are bound to come across with your dog. With the help of Adam G. Katz methods of dog training, you should be able to handle these issues with ease. Just remember, that most of the obedience problems in a dog stems from 'being lonely' , as such that can be easily tackled by spending some time together.

    เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 18:18

Good breeders have their dog's best interest at heart. Find out how to find a reputable dog breeder...

The surest way to take home healthy cavalier king charles spaniels is to buy from reputable breeders. With reputable breeders, cavalier king charles spaniels that will be included in the breeding process are screened for genetic defects such as mitral valve disease and syringomyelia. These two conditions can be both severe and very common; thus must not be taken for granted. Finding a reputable breeder means finding a healthy ...
cavalier king charles spaniel that can give you unconditional love and companionship for nine to 14 years.

Ask for referrals. You can find reputable breeders by asking referrals from veterinarian or other dog experts, relative or trusted friends who are also dog owners. You can also visit dog shows or contact breed clubs nearest you. They would be willing to share information you can use in your quest of a reputable breeder.

Ask to see the dogs. This is to ensure that the dogs under his/her care are well fed, friendly and provided with comfortable shelter. Pay attention to the parents of your prospective puppy since parents often provide indication of what to expect from the puppies.

Interview the breeder. Even if you are dealing with a specialized breeder (cavalier breeder, etc), you have to make sure that the breeder is knowledgeable about the breed. This is important because apart from your vet, you may need to contact the breeder from time to time with queries or concerns about the breed. A good breeder should be able to provide you with valuable information about the breed such as history, personality of the breed, training advice as well as health risks that are more likely to occur.

Breeder's attitude. Observe the breeder's attitude towards you. Is he/she approachable? Would they allow you to contact them from time to time? If you don't feel comfortable with that certain breeder, then it's time to move on to the next prospect. There's no use making deals with someone you aren't comfortable with in the first place.

A lot of questions. A breeder who cares will ask a lot of questions, cautious about who takes his/her puppies home. They would want to know where the puppy will sleep, if you have backyard and if you have other dogs and pets. They would also want to know about your children if there is any , your job and activities of the family. Some even ask to visit you to make sure that the puppy gets a good home.

    เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 18:18

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels need a good dose of walk daily. Find out tips on how to walk your pet properly...

Cavalier king charles spaniels can get a lot of their exercise needs from play, however, just like other dog breeds, play will not suffice their natural instinct to walk. As owner, you definitely know that these lively little dogs need daily walk to keep their sanity intact in addition to getting fresh air and exercise. Walking is beneficial not only to your cavalier but to you as well.

The proper way to wal ...
a dog is to walk either beside you or behind you. By doing so, you establish yourself as alpha or leader of the pack. This makes your dog easier to control and train knowing that he must submit to your commands being your follower. Allowing a dog to be the leader of the pack can cause many behavioral problems such as hyperactivity, aggression and/or neurotic disorders to name a few.

When you are ready to take your dog out, make your dog come to you and put the lead on. You can call him to come to you but you should never move toward him. Make him sit calmly before you put the leash on. Place the collar far up on the neck to give you more control over your dog.

When you are set to go, do not let your dog bolt out the door. Take him to the door and make him sit quietly there. Being the alpha, you must be the one to decide when it is time to leave, not your dog. When it is time to go, leave the house before your dog. If your dog runs out of the door before you, return him inside and start again. Remember, you are the one who decides when to leave.

While walking, it is important that you have to walk beside or in ahead of your dog. Do not constantly pull on your dog and never allow your dog to pull on you. If your dog is not obeying your command, getting too excited, starts to pull and/or not staying beside or behind you , give the leash a quick snap to get his attention back to you. You can also stop and make the dog sit until he is calm.

Do not allow the dog to sniff the ground or potty until you want him too. Let him understand you are in charge and he must concentrate on following you.

Relax. Walk your dog briskly and enjoy the moment.
