of their intelligence or their eagerness to learn may not always be successful in training if appropriate Boston Terrier training is not properly provided.

Start Young.
The saying "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" is not entirely true because dogs, regardless of age, can learn new things if appropriate training is provided. However, dog experts recommend early training because dogs, just like humans are much more receptive to new behaviors when young. And besides, training you puppies is easier than training older dogs because young ones have not yet developed bad manners that are sometimes hard to break. A dog owner can learn various training tips and methods from various sources such as a fell0w dog owner, veterinarians, books or magazines and of course from the internet. But among these various tips and methods, can you determine what's best for your dog? Dog owners must bear in mind that not all training tips and methods available are effective. Some maybe effective to you but not to others, or the other way around. Positive training is highly recommended and as much as possible, giving punishment should be avoided. But whatever training method you prefer, just make sure that your dog responds better to it.

Attitude.
Your attitude plays an important role to the success of your Boston Terrier training. You must be consistent , patient and gentle. Successful training cannot be attained within an hour or two. You need to be patient and believe that you will be successful someday soon. Losing your patient in training at the same time being inconsistent and harsh to your dog may cause you frustrations and you give up the training.

These training tips maybe simple but knowing them will definitely help you achieve positive result in Boston Terrier training.

nd persistent. With that, your determination as well as patience can contribute to the success of your english bulldog training.

Another issue that must be tackled when training the english bulldog is this breed's activity level. Although some can be full of energy, their laziness makes training quite a challenge. They are considered indoor dogs - very inactive indoor dogs and human attention is the best thing in the world for them. Thus it is important to keep training sessions as enjoyable as possible to keep your pet's attention in the training. Early socialization also plays an important role to the success of your english bulldog training. This aims to develop your puppy's social relationship with other puppies, older dogs as well as with people. Hip Dysplasia: An Issue Among Older English Bulldogs

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 20:41

วันพฤหัสบดีที่ 19 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2552

Hip dysplasia may possibly lead to progressive arthritis if not treated properly. Find out more about canine hip dysplasia...

Probably some people consider English Bulldogs as tough and intimidating dogs. Who wouldn't think that way when this breed possesses  certain characteristics that made people think that they are indeed tough and intimidating. Plus the fact that, they were originally used for bullbaiting as well as bearbaiting. Now who says English Bulldogs are not intimidating?

Yes, they look intimidating
but actually, they are not. They are in fact considered as one of the gentlest among dogs. They are extremely people-attention seeking dogs and would love every bit they can get. However, just like other dog breeds, English Bulldogs are subject to some health issues that can lead to the deterioration of the quality of their life.

One health issue that can possibly affect this breed, especially older dogs, is hip dysplasia. Many dog owners are aware of hip dysplasia probably because their own dogs have experienced it. But to those who doesn't know the disease, canine hip dysplasia is a result of abnormal development of the hip while your pet is still a puppy. This abnormal development involves the ball (the head of the femur or thighbone) and the socket (the acetabulum). When the ball and the socket do not fit snugly, painful and damaging friction occurs and will later progress to cartilage destruction, inflammation and pain. This can later result to progressive arthritis that can possibly cripple your pet.

A dysplastic dog has less energy and movement and suffers difficulty when rising. Lameness in the back legs, reluctance to use stairs especially when going up, reluctance to jump or stand on hind limbs soreness after lying down and after heavy exercise are also signs of the existence of canine hip dysplasia.

Veterinarians use x-rays in addition to physical examination to diagnose the disease. Most vets use the hip-extended ventrodorsal view x-ray because it provides a frontal view of the pelvis and hip joints and allows for an assessment of the arthritis present. PennHIP radiography technique on the other hand is usually used to detect hip looseness in younger dogs. Other less commonly used methods to diagnose  hip dysplasia are computed tomography (CT scan) and ultrasonography.

Hip dysplasia can be treated medically or surgically, depending on the severity of the condition. Conservative or medical treatments include pain and anti-imflammatory medications, weight loss programs, controlled exercise and physical therapy. These methods can be very effective however , conservative or medical treatments do have their limitations. Some cases of hip dysplasia call for surgical treatment such as osteotomy (TPO) and femoral head and neck incision in severe cases.

A good practice to prevent this is to screen breeding dogs for evidence of hip joint subluxation.

Does Your Cat Need Exercise?

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 20:41

Your cat needs exercise and stimulation in order to lead a happy, satisfied and healthy life. It's up to us to provide them with what they need for that to occur.

Unless you cat's energy can be channeled in a a positive way, he or she may become destructive. After all, he never has to worry about where his next meal is coming from, so there is no need for any real hunting or stalking. The frustrated cat that has excess energy to burn will chew your plants, scratch your furniture, tear your carpets and c
imb the curtains.

He may even go berserk for half an hour, running manically back and forth across the room or around the perimeter, doing the "wall of death" - strange behavior for a cat, normally so lazy a creature! Some cats develop the annoying habit of sucking wool, usually a sign of premature weaning. In order to prevent these problems from occurring, ensure that your cat is always mentally stimulated and has plenty of opportunity for exercise.

Stimulating your cat:

Toys provide a practical outlet through which cats can exhaust themselves. They need not imitate prey specifically, but should encourage activities such as scratching, chasing and batting. Toys that move are often favored as they arouse the cats curiosity. Scratching posts, balls of many different materials, batting toys are all items that will help your cat be stimulated. In addition, a scratching post can help to prevent your cat from scratching at your furniture in as well as help them remove loose claws.

Training your cat:

Although we seldom notice it, cats are constantly training themselves. If, for example, your cat raids the garbage can successfully, he learns that this is a rewarding action. However, rewards such as food or affection do not work well when training cats out of bad habits. Surprise, NEVER involving pain, is the best way to overcome most of your feline friend's behavioral problems. A water sprayer , noisemakers and aluminum foil are all used to help your cat see the error of his ways!

I once had a cat that I just could not keep out of the soil in my indoor potted plants. What I did to keep him out was to place regular adhesive tape – sticky side up – across the dirt. My cat did not like the feel of the sticky tape and my plant was forever more safe! There are many "tricks" like this that you can use to train your cat. Aluminum foil spread in places where your cat goes potty outside the litter box will help train your cat to stop using that spot. They hate the feel and sound of it as they step on in. A water sprayer kept close by your side can be used to effectively stop your cat in it's tracks as is surprises them and helps redirect whatever trouble they are into!

English Bulldog: Exercise and Obesity

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 19:23

วันอาทิตย์ที่ 15 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2552

Obesity is one of the major problems affecting dogs. Know what role exercising is playing in this health issue...

Obesity is one of the most common problems affecting dogs of any breed, even the tough looking English Bulldog is at risk. In fact, dog experts believe that obesity is the fourth leading cause of death among dogs. Why? Be aware that, just like humans, fat dogs are more prone to heart disease, fatty liver disease, cancer, canine diabetes, kidney issues as well skeletal stress.

You will know if Fido is overwe
ght when you can no longer feel his ribs because of the increasing amounts of fat. There is also minimal or no tuck up in the tummy area. While obese dogs have heavy fat over the ribs, along the spine and around the tail, morbidly fat dogs on the other hand have protruding abdomens and fat deposits throughout their bodies.

If not properly exercised, the English Bulldog can gain weight easily. Other than  that, exercise also helps them release their energy and provides challenge which is ideal in preventing problems such as aggression and other behavior issues. Daily exercise, particularly daily walks must be taken on not only to help trim down weight but also to fulfill their primal canine instinct to walk.

But there are things owners must remember when exercising the English Bulldog. Although some bulldogs are full of energy, it is not advisable to run them too much. In addition to having short legs, they are prone to respiratory issues and can cause them to overheat when run too much. This breed is very sensitive to heat thus utmost care is needed especially exercising during overly warm periods. When going out to exercise , be sure to keep your dog out of standing heat and do not forget to bring plenty of water for him to drink.

Checking the quality of dog foods you give to your dog is also one sure way to prevent your English Bulldog from gaining excessive weight.

Finding Two Perfect Dog Houses

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 19:23

There are many types of dog houses available in many different styles. Take a look at some that are on the market today, including wood and plastic dog houses and well as indoor ones.

I was recently shopping for a couple of dog houses (I have an Irish Wolfhound and a Labrador Retriever), and was surprised about all that was available. Not only in styles and materials, but I also came across some unusual things.

First, I did not know that you could get an indoor dog ho
se. Most of these are soft houses that are designed for small dogs, you can get them in a variety of colors and styles, many are cute. Other are made of wicker like a basket, and some are functional and will double as an end table. But none of these really work for my dogs, they are just too big! Inside they like to stretch out and be one of the family, it is for outside that I need a couple of dog houses.

The two main types of material that you find dog houses made of are plastic and wood. With plastic you can get different colors such as pink, blue, green, red and brown. They also come in many styles. The ones that I have seen around a lot lately are the igloo dog houses. You can also find houses in a barn type style, and the standard A-frame style like Snoopy has, and even one with a flatter roof line in case your dog wants to lay on top of his house like snoopy! Many plastic dog houses are insulated, so they keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter. They weigh less than a traditional wood house, and are really easy to clean with a garden hose. A plastic dog house can be shipped flat, and then be easily assembled in a few minutes by just snapping it together.

Personally, I prefer wood, I just like the look of them better. Most I found are made of fir, though cedar is also popular. I really liked the variety of styles available in wood dog houses. Naturally, you could find the A-frame style, but also the single slant roof design.  One feature that I really like that you can find on either of these styles of dog houses is a hinged roof for easy cleaning. A raised floor is also important to help keep your dog cool in summer and warm in winter. Besides just getting the basic dog house, many companies also offer optional porches (some covered and some open), so your dog can lounge outside his door, or half in and half out of his house. I also found a house that had a flat roof with a balcony on top, so your dog really can pretend to be Snoopy! I did find an interesting option that I had not seen before, and that is a duplex dog house. The inner panel is optional, so you can either separate two dogs, or let them bunk together.

Wooden , or the doggy duplex.

Constructing Your Very Own Worm Farm

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 19:27

วันเสาร์ที่ 14 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2552

Worm composting is using worms to transform table scraps and kitchen leavings to a valuable soil amendment called vericompost or castings or vericast.

Beginning worm farming is not too complicated all you'll need is a bit of passion for recycling and a little bit of worm trivia so here is some worm trivia that might help motivate and inspire youwith your worm farming.. How much will the worms eat? Mature worms capable of eating up or over three times their own body weight every day and those who are just getting their feet
et out in worm farming and would enjoy knowing how make worms eat more to be more productive.

The answer is easy - shred, mash or blend food scraps as these will give added digestibility and is very easily eaten by the worms. also make sure you keep their bed  temperature at around 23-25 degrees Celsius, since it's at these temperatures that worms feed better but, avoid acidic foods, as it will screw up their digestive system. The following are a few things you may also want to avoid feeding your worms period manure, onions, citrus fruits or peelings, garlic, garden waste sprayed with insecticides, dairy products like milk and cheese or meat.

Keeping the farm moist will heighten the production of the liquid fertilizer but take care not to add too much water into the farm or the worms will die. Take note that food wastes are nearly eighty percent water and that gets released when the worms break them down. So, if you happen to pour water over the system every few weeks or so make sure that you only add enough to be sure that the worm bed stays cool and you will have a constant supply of liquid fertilizer.

You won't actually be able to harvest the worms as they tent to regulate themselves within any available space and food given to them. The following are some additional questions that you could end up asking.

Why is it common for worms to congregate on the lid of the farm during rainy periods? It is a normal response for these worms to react this way during the rainy season to avoid getting drowned.to avoid drowning. Simply move the worm farm bins or boxes to a place where it won't be exposed to too much rain and drop the worms on their bedding

Why don't the worms go to the top of the tray? It may be because you putting in new food before the worms have completed the previous feeding batch. Worms have an instinct to eat leftovers and will not search for a new food source until it's done with what was already left. As a result, before adding new trays, halt the feeding of the worms for at least five days to ensure all existing food is gone and make sure that the levels at the tray needs to be placed high enough for the worms to pass easily up to the next tray.

Do worms have the ability with stand extremely high temperatures? Worms can tolerate a temperature range between 10-30 degrees Celsius so if it gets hotter than they can stand, place the farm in a nice shady cool area where it won't have any trouble regulating moisture and humidity of the worm boxes. In cold temperatures, cover the box with old clothes, blankets and wool shavings to sustain the warm temperature. It is also best to feed about a quarter that recommended since more food digested on the worms part permits more heat being generated in their bodies. So , do take heed of these ideas and soon you'll be able to constructing your very own worm farm.

How To Setup A Worm Farm

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 19:09

Worm composting is using worms to transform table scraps and kitchen leavings to a valuable soil amendment called vericompost or castings or vericast.

Many individuals decide to keep chickens while there are others who prefer livestock but if you want to help cultivate the soil by restoring it's nutrients then you build a worm farm instead to buying a pre-built one at a supply store. The nice thing about creating your own worm farm is that it doesn't that much. All you'll need are 3 to 4 stacked bins or crates made of plast
c, wood or any other light weight and waterproofed substance, a few worms, as well as a strip of insect screen for the bottom portion shredded newsprint, yard earth or potting compost, water and good scraps.

Once you've collected these materials it is time to build the worm farm by placing a number of holes in the lid and on the bottom. The amount of holes depends on how big the box is but keep in mind that the holes must be evenly spaced to let oxygen and excess water pass through as well as worm waste, to drain out. The insect screen should be securely placed at the bottom so the worms do not fall out.

Now that you've made on the exterior of the worm farm, it's time to go to the inside by putting in some with shredded newspaper. You should put three quarters of it in and dampened with water before you add the garden soild or even potting mix this is done to be sure the worms eat the scraps you throw in. When everything is prepared this is the time to welcome the worms to their new abode. Some people will pour in about a thousand of these little creatures and as long as they're happy they will reproduce and you'll probably lose all count of how many are in there.

But what do we do the other stuff? Well here we go, the final step is to place the extras containers over the first one.

If you know what worms like to eat a few examples are coffee grounds or tea leaves, crushed egg shells, fruit peel, hair clippings, spoiled cookies and cakes, saw dust, plate scraps, soaked cardboard, vacuum dust and vegetable scraps. In short, worms love to eat dirt and leftovers but don’t put too much since you might over feed them. the best way to determine what is enough would be to place a small amount in at first and then watch how long it actually takes for them to finish it before you give them more. Since it's a big area it would also be thoughtful to place their food in different spots each time.

Check on your worms regularly so you can be sure that the newspaper does not dry out and if the old newspaper needs to be changed, make sure you replace it.

As with all things in nature, poop will appear at the bottom of the box however this particular waste product is also called vermicast and vermicast helps plants grow. The only way you can get at the vermicastwithout having the worms get out so it is best to open the container and just set it under direct sunlight for a bit. worms hate sunlight so they'll look for cover and you'll have an easy time to grab the vermicast and shut the lid

The worm farm is wonderful with growing flowers , fruits or even veggies and all it takes is some willpower to get the help from these little creatures.

Care Tips To Keep Weimaraners Healthy

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 20:22

วันอาทิตย์ที่ 8 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2552

Find out a few tips on how to care for your weimaraners...

Keeping weimaraners as pets is not unusual neither impossible. Many people have come to love this breed despite the fact that they were originally bred to hunt large animals such as boar, bears, deer and foxes. In addition to being incredible hunters, weimaraners have become loyal and loving guardian of his family - an all purpose gun dog indeed.

With all the good and useful things dogs are capable of doing, in return, they want nothing but their owner's love a
d care necessary to keep them fit and happy. It is just right that owners must their part in caring for their four-legged furry friend.

Here are some tips you may find helpful in caring for your Weimaraners:

Know your dog.
This simply means that you should know your dog's characteristics, personality traits, his needs and even possible health issues. By doing so, you will be able to know what to do whatever happens.

Dog Foods.
There are different forms of commercial dog foods; dry form also known as kibble, wet form and semi-moist food. Whatever form you prefer, it is important that you choose high quality dog foods. Review the list of ingredients on the labels and make sure that the first or second ingredient is meat, fish, egg or some type of meat or fish meal. Low quality dog foods mostly contain more fillers and animal-by-products with lower energy values and lower-grade proteins. So be careful!

Feeding.
Know that weimaraners are prone to bloat and gastric tortion. Feeding three to four small meals a day can can prevent this health issue from happening. Doing vigorous exercise should also be prevented approximately one hour before or after meals.

Exercise.
These hunting dogs need extensive exercise to keep up with their physical endurance and stamina. Walk or run your weimaraner at least once or twice a day and give plenty of time off leash. Just remember not to exercise your pet before or after eating to prevent the occurrence of bloat.

Training.
Early and proper socialization is important to this breed. Children as well as other dogs and animals should be socialized early on to prevent aggressive behavior among weimaraners.

It is also important to train puppies to obey comamnds such as sit, stay , come and down to prevent jumping in the future since these dogs can knock elederly people or children by accident.

Cat owners whose pets are diagnosed with diabetes are usually afraid of what may happen. But then again, it is possible for your cat to live long and happily, even with this disease. Your pet only needs dedication and care throughout the ordeal.  Diabetes might still be an incurable disease these days. But it can certainly be managed easily.

First and foremost, your cat needs consistent medical attention. Once you're sure that your cat is suffering from this disease, regular visits to the vet become manda
ory. The purpose of these checkups is to check the sugar level in your pet's blood. It also ensures that your cat is getting the insulin that it needs. The vet would draw a blood sample from your pet and test it. Don't feed your cat for 12 hours prior to the checkup. Bring your pet to the veterinarian every 3 months for disease monitoring.

Second, know that from here on, your cat will need the hormone insulin. Your cat would require insulin shots twice daily. The right dosage will be determined by the vet. This is the primary medication for your pet. Make it a habit to give the shots at a certain time of the day to make it a routine for your pet. Usually, insulin is given twelve hours after the first dosage of the day.

The vet would show you how to inject your cat with insulin so you don't have to bring it there all the time. Insulin is usually administered between the shoulder blades of cats. Don't worry. In due time, your cat would get used to the slight pain caused by the needle. If you do it right, your cat might even be the one to remind you that it needs its shot for the day. This is the reason why it is important to give your pet insulin during the same time every single day.

Third, it is your responsibility to have a stock of all of the things you need. Your cat needs its shot every day, no excuses. Therefore, you should always see to it that you have adequate alcohol, syringe, and of course, insulin inside the medicine drawer. Order supplies before they run out. Give allowances because the vet may also lose stocks of them. The same goes true for supplements that the vet prescribed for your pet. Make sure that your pet receives all the medicine it needs all the time. Keep important numbers handy in case of emergency cases.

While a lot of people think that diabetes is cats is the end of their pet's world, it isn't really. In fact, you don't have to spend a lot of money to take care of your sick pet. Insulin costs around $85 per vial but that's already equivalent to 2 months' supply. Syringes in boxes of 100 are a mere $30 and those are something you can use for 50 days. Make sure that you use a fresh syringe for every shot. You may have to change your cat's food and add some supplements to the list. But those won't make too much of a dent to your budget either. Your diabetic cat needs all the love and patience it needs. If you ensure your pet of that , then it can stay with you happily for quite some time.

What You Should Know About Weimaraners

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 18:20

วันศุกร์ที่ 6 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2552

If you consider having Weimaraner as a pet, it is important that you are aware of this breed's characteristics. Discover the weimaraner's temperament, physical appearance and more...

The first time you see Weimaraners, you will definitely be amazed with this breed's pleasing appearance. Having bred from dogs used by royalty, Weimaraners possess elegant, noble and athletic appearance. Although they were originally bred to hunt large game such as boar, bears, deer and foxes, they can be loyal and loving pets of the family as wel
. Yes, these all purpose gun dogs can make great household pets too! But before you take home a Gray Ghost, it a great idea to find out fact about them.

Appearance.
It is important that all parts of the dog should be in balance with each other. The head is long and aristocratic and the muzzle is strong. The ears are moderately long and pendant. Both head and ears are a bit lighter in color than the rest of the body. The tails are docked usually at birth to keep it short (a third of its natural length). AKC standard calls for a height of 25 to 27 inches at the withers for male and 23 to 25 inches for female. Males normally weigh 70-85 pounds while females are usually between 55-70 pounds. The breed comes in short and very smooth coated or a rarer long-haired variety. The color may range from charcoal-blue to mouse-gray to silver-gray. A distinct blue or black coat is an automatic disqualification based on the AKC.

Temperament.
As gun dogs, weimaraners are very protective of their family and can be very territorial. They are usually not sociable to strangers thus they must be thoroughly socialized to prevent aggression. Known as dogs with human brain, weimaraners are highly intelligent dogs ranking 21st in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs. They are usually kind with children but bear in mind that smaller children should not be left with this dog because they have the tendency to knock out a kid while playing.

Being hunting dogs, they have strong instinctive prey drive. They will not hesitate to chase small animals that enter their territory. Luckily, this can be prevented with proper socialization when your pup is still young.

Training.
Like any other breeds, this breed needs training too. Less-experienced owners may need to have their pets trained by professional trainers given this breed's strong personality. Should be done at an early age, socialization should include introducing to other pets such as cats, birds and other animals, introducing to cars, buildings and other people as well. Vigorous exercise, games and running this breed is absolutely needed.

Health.
Weimaraners are more likely to suffer from bloat or gastric torsion because of their deep chest. Other health issues include hip and elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, progressive retinal atrophy , entropion and distichiasis.

Neon Tetras in Your Tropical Fish Aquarium

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 18:19

Neon Tetra fish are small freshwater fishes and very popular with tropical aquarium enthusiasts because of their bright colors and ease of care.

Probably the most popular tropical aquarium Tetra is the Neon Tetra. Originally from freshwater streams in Brazil, Columbia and Peru, it's a peaceful, community fish and quite suitable for the beginner aquarist.

The Neon Tetra is a schooling fist and, as such, should always be kept with a community of 10 or so – they get lonely and sicken if alone. They
prefer a somewhat dim environment so a few floating plants to filter the light is recommended as well as a dark substrate flooring. In addition, place plenty of plants on the bottom of the tank for hiding spots– but leave enough room for some "open" swimming. Be aware that during the night, - when your Neon Tetra is hiding and resting - it will "turn off" it's bright sparkling colors and it will look dull or dim. Light will gradually bring back their bright coloration.

The water temperature for Neon Tetras should be kept between 72F-78F degrees. Neon Tetras, in the wild are omnivores and eat a variety of foods including crustaceans, worms and small insects. They do love to eat, though, so be careful of over-feeding. Use a high quality flake food, with occasional supplements of daphnia, or brine shrimp for variety and they will do quite well. The pH balance of your tank should be from 5.5-7.5, which should be easy to maintain with such a nice span! Because their natural habitat has lots of rainfall, it is recommended that you replace your tank water frequently.

Neon Tetras, due to the wide range of waters in which they have been bred (whether in captivity or the wild), should be carefully acclimated into your tank to allow them plenty of time to adapt to their new home.

Neon Tetras are susceptible to – well – Neon Tetra disease. The official name is Pleistophora, which is the name of the sporozoan which causes the disease. There is no cure for the disease and the best way to avoid it is to prevent it from entering your tank in the first place. New fish should always be quarantined in a separate tank for a few days before being released into the main tank. The first sign of the disease are usually restlessness and a dull coloration. This is followed by cysts , which make the fishes body look lumpy. The Tetra will have trouble swimming and near the end the spine will become curved. By quarantining new fish you can help prevent the spread of this disease. Neon Tetra can also get Pleistophora from eating the bodies of dead fish – so be sure to remove any sick or dead fish as soon as possible.
