Training A Yorkie puppy involves time, patience and consistency. Your Yorkie puppy can appear stubborn, may not listen or respond to her name and being selective at best when responding to your commands i.e. when it suits her.
There a few common methods including Obedience training, Socialisation training, Command training and Trick training. In essence they all have the same basics. They all involve some type of positive re-enforcement. This basically means when your Yorkie does the correct behaviour that is required, he is positively
re-enforced with either a treat or some good petting.
This is the best form and never involves any scolding or punishment of any type. In fact this can be very rewarding and you can really also build a great bond with your Yorkie.
Some things to consider when training a Yorkie
1. Do not let your puppy get way with bad behaviour just because she is small and cute, treat her as you would when working with a Labrador for example.
2. Start your puppy as soon as possible, the earlier the better. The longer you leave it the harder it will be to get the puppy out of bad habits.
3. The biggest mistake owners make is giving their Yorkie attention at the wrong time.
4. Stick to a scheduled daily routine with your Yorkie. Your puppy will know whats expected if he gets into a schedule of when to go potty in the morning, when to eat and when its playtime.
5. Always re-use the same words as commands over and over so your Yorkie can recognise the words. For example, when teaching your puppy when its ok to bark, use the word 'talk'.
Training a Yorkie takes work but it is worth every moment, once you've got the hang of it and are starting to understand how your Yorkie process's the commands you give her then it gets really easy
