Although Koi are closely related to goldfish, they are far more expensive and difficult to replace because of their size. In order to ensure good health and well-being, Koi owners should follow these simple guidelines for proper Koi care.

The first and most important guideline is making sure that your Koi pond is the proper size. The fact that Koi can grow up to several feet long means that a pond of five hundred gallons or more of freshwater will be needed for them to thrive and prosper. If the pond is smaller, then the size of your K
i should be closely monitored. As they grow in size, you can do one of two things:

1. Expand the size of your pond

2. Find new homes for the larger Koi and replace them with smaller ones.

The second guideline is to monitor the water quality of your pond very closely. A larger amount of water translates into a more favorable environment for your Koi because the waste products are more diluted and the water chemistry will stay favorable for their health.

Maintaining an ideal temperature for your pond water is the third guideline in proper Koi care. Koi are a cold water fish and they are at their healthiest when exposed to water temperatures between 61 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Please keep in mind that although they prefer these temperatures Koi can remain outside during the winter months if you are in a part of the world where your pond won't fully freeze.

When the temperatures drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, Koi do not need to eat because their slowed digestive systems will not process foods at that temperature, essentially they enter into a winter hibernation.
