A saltwater aquarium full of nasty green algae is not only an eye sore but also a cause of stress for the tans owner. Luckily most marine aquarium algae problems can be solved with the right approach and patience. The tips below will help you get rid of marine aquarium algae fast.

Understand The Problem First

Before you begin to wage war on algae you must first realize why you have it and why it grows. Algae grows in your aquarium or any ecosystem to absorb excess nutrients like nitrate and phosphate that at high
levels that would harm the fish, it basically acts as a line of defense.

How To Get Rid Of Marine Aquarium Algae Fast

With the above information in mind your goal should be to reduce the amount of available nitrates and phosphates available to it and that will over time slowly kill it off.

  • Do frequent water changes with purified or reverse osmosis water and a high quality salt mix
  • Clean your filters and protein skimmer more frequently they you normally do
  • Shut of the pumps when you feed your fish and add food slowly instead of all at once and make sure the fish eat all you add.
  • Vacuum the aquariums gravel to remove settled debris that can add nutrients to the water
  • Increase the circulation in your saltwater tank to keep fish waste and other debris in suspension so they have a better chance of being removed by the filter system
  • Re evaluate your tanks fish load and remove any fish if you feel the tank is over stocked.
  • Use crabs and snails to eat the algae, just do not add to many that they die off after the algae is gone.
  • Put your saltwater tanks lights on a timer and keep them on for only 8 hours a day.

If you want a a crystal clear successful Marine Aquarium our saltwater aquarium guide will show you how to avoid the common mistakes that lead to fish death, algae and an ugly tank. To get the secrets to creating a stunning marine aquarium visit http://www.saltwatermethods.com

The Maremma: Alpine Sheep Herder

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 19:14

The Maremma Sheepdog is native to the Italian Alps. This is a breed that has an extraordinary capability of working in the higher altitudes. For many hundreds of years, the life of the sheep, the shepherds and the Maremma dog that guarded the flock was structured on the seasons. From June to October the flocks would be moved to the high country in the mountains of Abruzzi and from October to June they would go down to the plains and rolling pastures of Maremma. The job of the Maremma historically has been that of a livestock protector an
herding dog, being of great value to the Italian peasants as they moved their flocks of mountain goats and sheep through the high alpine pastures, not only herding but also protecting the flock from predators. The Maremma has the capability of working independently as a flock protector and is noted for its high intelligence. A few of the dogs stayed behind as farm protectors and gradually the Maremma also became known as the large white dog who frequented the fine homes of Tuscany as a companion and watchdog.

The Maremma is a large white dog with profuse and abundant coat. One might confuse the dog with the Pyrenees or the Kuvasz, excerpt that the head of the Maremma is much larger in proportion to the body and in fact is very like that of the Polar bear, conical in shape and massive. In general, of the large white dogs that are the herding dogs of central Europe and the Alps, the Maremma is probably the breed that exhibits the most independent thinking and is one of the dogs considered to be a very protective dog, working in the dual role as flock guard and herder. The Maremma is a large breed, standing 24 inches at the withers, with a heavy coat that is all white with perhaps a shade of ivory or biscuit on the ears. The coat needs to be regularly groomed. The correct coat should be weather resistant, providing protection from the sun and the cold, this is a dog that should not be shaved.

The Maremma has always been around people, though its existence has been solitary it is a breed that will not do well without a human to protect or work alongside. This is a dog that strives to work for its master but also can be a difficult dog for simple obedience commands, since it is a "thinker" and will become bored with repetition. They are extremely loyal, considered to be a one person dog, devoted and protective yet proud and dignified. This is a dog that requires a knowledgeable owner, since it is not inclined to be subservient but is more likely to be somewhat stubborn and strong willed.

Horseback Riding - The Art Of Acquiring Balance - Part 3

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 19:14

In order to visualize a rider that is truly balanced on his mount, I recommend you rent and watch any old Western film. Observe the Native American rider. He rode expertly without the use of any of our modern day equipment. Not only did he ride his horse, he hunted and fought off the enemy on horseback. How was that possible? No stirrups to help maintain balance, no horn to hold on to and no bridle to control his horse. I believe the answer is that he didn't "think" about riding, he simply rode.

Today's society offers
such a wide array of tools to help us improve our riding skills. We have different types of saddles to provide us with more security, bits and bridles to offer more control over our horses and an endless supply of horse training trinkets. The aspiring young rider could easily be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of items listed in any horse catalog. What do I recommend? Put it all aside for now. It's time to get back to basics and stop "thinking" so much about our riding and just ride.

I recommend that you ride your horse without the use of a saddle, bridle or any other encumbrance that will actually deter you from acquiring true balance on your horse. Naturally, you will need a safe, calm mount to practice these exercises.

Begin in a small space, such as a round pen. Practice mounting your horse without the use of a mounting block or any other aid. Grab a handful of mane and jump. The goal is to land your stomach on the horse's back. Once you get your belly on the horse, it takes little effort to swing your right leg over and sit the center of your horse. I see many riders struggle with this exercise so I recommend you practice it over and over until you become skilled at it.

Once you are sitting on your horse, simply ask him to walk on. Use your seat and legs to encourage forward movement and to control direction. Use your back to control the speed. When you sit back, deep and brace your back, your horse will soon learn that this is his cue to slow down or to stop. Practice using your legs to control his direction. Again, you are in a small area and this is quite safe. You may need to experiment a bit because all horses come from a different background and have been trained differently. Feel your horse and notice what cues he responds to best. Does a squeeze with the right leg at the girth cause your horse to bend around your leg or does he tend to move away from the pressure of your leg. Continue to practice this in the round pen using your legs, seat and back. You'll be amazed at how quickly you and your horse learn to communicate with each other in a very natural way.

At this point, you should be feeling quite comfortable on your horse without a saddle. Practice such movements as turning around on your horse. Sit your horse backwards and then continue spinning around until you are facing forwards. Remember, don't think too much. Just do it. Enjoy a soda, cup of coffee or have a conversation with a friend while practicing. These are all ways to become more comfortable and to take the focus off the exercise. It should become effortless and be performed with no fear. Trust your horse.

As you become more comfortable, try these exercises at a trot. This will certainly be more challenging at first, but stick with it. Always focus on using your seat, legs and back. Work on transitions. Using your seat and back, encourage a downward transition. Continue working on transitions until they become natural. You will be forced to feel your horse and maintain balance.

The more advanced rider may try these same exercises at the canter. Don't rush through one exercise until you've mastered the previous one. The goal is to feel safe and comfortable. Any stiffness or fear will immediately be felt by your horse and your skills won't work. It's equally important for your horse to feel relaxed as it is for you. The ultimate goal of this work is for you and your horse to become one. When this is felt by the rider, one may say that balance has been achieved.

Julie Chaffee has been riding horses for over 35 years and welcomes this opportunity to share her experiences with you. She currently owns and operates a full service horse training, boarding and lesson facility in Cleveland, Texas. Advantix For Dogs Versus K-9 Advantix Versus Frontline Plus - How To Choose The Best Pet Meds!

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 19:14

OK, pet lovers, let's cut straight to the point. No matter how much you love your pets, your kids, or your significant other, you're more comfortable snuggling with them if they don't have fleas and ticks, right?

Well, now it's easier than ever to find safe and effective flea and tick spray for your dog or cat. In fact there are 3 leading name brand products for dogs (K-9 Advantix for dogs only, Advantage flea killer and Frontline Plus for dogs) and two for cats (Advantage Flea Killer and Frontline Plus for cats) that v
ts recommend and users endorse because they work.

You can buy any of these products for around $10-$15/month, depending on where you buy them, whether you buy in bulk, and which product you choose. Some of the best deals are to be found online. You can get free same-day shipping on most orders, and you can often get discount coupons or find sales to save an addition 15% or so on your order. (These products are usually 20-50% less online than at your vet's, anyway.)

I personally recommend Frontline Plus, since that is the product that I used for my dog, Kera who is a "Goldador" (Labrador x Golden Retriever mix). She was a guide dog puppy in training and the guide dog school was very strict. They said that we puppy raisers MUST use flea and tick control products and then said it MUST be one of the three I mentioned above.

Ingredients in K-9 Advantix for dogs and Advantage Flea Killer

The difference between canine Advantage and K-9 Advantix for dogs is that K-9 Advantix has 2 active ingredients (Imidacloprid and Permethrin) and Advantage for dogs or cats has just one (Imidacloprid). Advantage, with fewer active ingredients, also has fewer listed potential side effects. If you're trying to decide on using K-9 Advantix for dogs versus Advantage, I would start with Advantage (cheaper, fewer chemicals) and see if it is effective for your dog. If you need something stronger, than escalate to K9 Advantix for dogs, or in the case of a cat, switch to Frontline Plus for cats due to the different chemical make up of the medicine.

Ingredients in Frontline Plus For Dogs or Cats

Frontline Plus has an entirely different set of active ingredients (Fipronil and S-methoprene) and is also not listed as having any known side effects. You can start with Frontline, or switch to Frontline if Advantix or Advantage is not working for you. I will point out that Frontline Plus is the only one of the three that indicates it is safe to use for puppies or kittens as young as 8 weeks or on pregnant/lactating female dogs. However, it's always a good idea to check with your veterinarian before using any pesticide products if you have a dog or cat whose health is sensitive.

Pick Your Favorite Flea Control To Start With, And See If It Works For You!

The bottom line is that it is important to use some kind of flea control product on your dog or cat if you live in an area with fleas, mosquitoes or ticks. These parasites suck blood and can carry diseases. The disease can spread from wild animals to pets and to humans.

Be safe - take care of your pet and your family - with a safe and effective year-round flea control regimen.

Emily J. Cressey loves comparison shopping to find great deals on cheap flea control products!

The Love Of A Feline - Practical Advice On Bonding With A Newly Adopted Cat

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 03:44

วันเสาร์ที่ 23 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2552

When you adopt a new feline into your family, obviously you'd love to bond with him immediately. You want to show him you're friendly, and welcome him into your home. Sometimes this goes well, and your cat settles in quickly. Quite often, however, you'll find your new friend hiding under the bed, rather unwilling to be sociable.

If this has happened in your household, please don't be upset. It doesn't mean that your cat doesn't like you! There are many possible reasons for his behaviour. It could be that his pre
ious humans have not treated him very well. It could be that his time in the animal shelter has been stressful; no matter how great the care they've given him, being in a place with a load of other stressed animals is unlikely to be fun. On top of that, he has a new territory to get used to, has to get used to the different routines of your household, and, of course, he has to get used to you. A move tends to be unsettling for all of us, so imagine what it's like for a cat, who hasn't prepared himself for the occasion.

Time is the key here. Allow the cat to hide away a bit. So long as you make sure he knows where to find his food, water and tray, he'll be alright. When he surfaces, it's best to keep your voice gentle and refrain from making sudden loud noises. This might startle him back into hiding.

It's not recommended to try and pick him up at this point. For such intimate contact there needs to be trust, and this has not yet been established. Some cats will never enjoy being picked up no matter how comfortable they are with you, so whilst you're still a stranger it truly is a step too far.

There's nothing wrong with trying to encourage your new friend into exploration and a proper bonding session. A small treat or cat toy might make him curious enough to come explore. If he does, allowing him to sniff your fingers can be a good first step.

If he does show curiosity it's not recommended to force the matter. You're not being rejected, even if it may feel that way! He'll surface and come to trust you soon enough.

If your cat is so scared that he shows signs of aggression, such as a hiss, flattened ears or even a swiping paw, do not despair. The hiss and flattened ears are warning signs, which mean that he doesn't intend harm; he just doesn't want you to come too close. It's advisable to monitor this behaviour, but generally it will pass. The claws mean you've entered his personal space, so again it's good to step back. Let him come to you when he's ready.

If you have children, it's likely that they will be somewhat disappointed. You've brought home a new friend, they might have chosen him themselves, and now he doesn't want to play! If you explain to them that their new friend is a bit shy and scared, and that he'll be alright soon enough, they do tend to understand. You can involve them through letting them help feed the feline, and by asking them to leave a treat for him, or a choose a toy.

Sometimes the best way to make a new cat comfortable is by pretending to ignore him. When you stare at him and make too much of a fuss over his presence, he might feel daunted. If you pretend not to notice him, he might feel secure enough to actually approach you. This is not unusual feline behaviour; sometimes they'll even end up on your lap.

For a cat to get used to his new home can take a few weeks. Even after that, the road to true trust can be a lengthy one, and the bond between you is one that will develop and strengthen over the years.

There's no telling how soon a feline will adapt. When choosing a cat at an animal shelter, you can easily spot those who are terrified, which is an indication of the time needed to establish trust. However, cats that are affectionate enough upon the first meeting might still dash for a hiding place when you bring them home.

Patience truly is the key. It will be worth it in the end, and before you know it you'll have a loving friend to build many good memories with.

Raw Chicken For Dogs

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 03:44

Many Dog owners have a real issue with feeding raw food to their Dogs.

We forget that Dogs are natural meat eaters and no wild Dog or Wolf has ever decided to cook its food before eating!

Raw meat and bones are one of the best treats you could give to your Dog and will have the added advantage of keeping their teeth clean.

Raw Chicken for Dogs is a fantastic treat. They can eat the whole bird with no adverse consequences. Raw Chicken bones are soft and easily crunched up and digested by your Dog. There is no need to be conc
rned. Chicken Wings are a great favourite for Dogs. Cheap and easy to give as a great, tasty treat.

Much better is to buy a whole Chicken and cut it in to pieces. You can then treat your Dog on occasion with a super snack. They love munching on Chicken necks as well.

The only thing you need to keep in mind is the sharp needle like bone in the Chicken thigh. Remove it before feeding the thigh to your Dog. It is very sharp and may cause injury. Apart from this all other parts of the Chicken are great for your Dog. You will be amazed how much they will appreciate this fantastic treat. Once you have begun to feed raw Chicken you will wish you had done it before.

It is a simple yet super tasty treat for your beloved Dog. Why not try it and see how much they enjoy it?
If you have any concerns talk to your Vet about it beforehand. Just remember never to feed cooked bones to a Dog. Cooked bones are very brittle and can cause untold damage in a Dog.

Yorkie Puppy Training - Lead Or Be Led

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 03:44

Stubborn Yorkie?
Yorkie Doesn't Respond To Her Name?
Just Stepped In Another Puddle Or Something Even Worse In Your Home?
Yorkie Got You Running Around In Circles? Read On...

Yorkie puppy training starts with the one common mistake Yorkie owners make the most often. That common mistake is 'giving your Yorkie attention at the wrong time'. Let me give you an example.

Say your Yorkie is jumping up and down your leg, you take your little puppy off your leg and put her on the ground. As you do this you say &
39;her name and say no bad puppy'.

What does your Yorkie actually hear? Your Yorkie hears something very different. Your puppy hears 'when I jump up and down my owners leg, guess what, I get attention, I love attention I think I should jump up and down legs more often'. Hence the cycle starts and continues on.

Yorkie puppies rely on their instincts and naturally have something called 'pack mentality'. As a fundamental part of your Yorkie puppy training you need to establish yourself as the 'Alpha Dog' of the house. This is absolutely critical, other wise your Yorkie puppy will never listen to anything else you teach her.

To Establish Your Dominance:

1. Always be the first to leave and enter your house before your Yorkie
2. Be the first to eat your meal and let your puppy know it.
3. Do not allow your Yorkie puppy to sleep in your bed or sit in your chair and be at a level higher than you.
4. If you happen to walk past and your Yorkie is laying in your way always move the puppy and never walk around her.
5. If your Yorkie potties in your home by accident, never clean it up in front of her.

These steps are just some of the fundamentals to establish dominance. This is not cruel or unkind, in fact your Yorkie will appreciate. Your Yorkie wants to know what is expected of her.

This type of Yorkie puppy training relies on positive re-enforcement i.e. giving praise when your Yorkie does the behaviour you are happy with. You do not need to scold or punish your puppy, ever.

Once you understand the thought process and know and understand why your Yorkie puppy is doing whats shes doing you will be able to make fast changes to her behaviour.

Raising Goats For Mohair

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 03:44

Certain types of goats produce long hair that can be shorn, like a sheep of its wool, and made into clothing. There are two types of goat which are popular with knitters and weavers; the Cashmere, which appropriately produces Cashmere, and the Angora, which produces Mohair.

Cashmere and Mohair are both excellent animal fibers; however I will focus here on Mohair, and the Angora goat. Mohair is used in sweaters, coats, scarves, floor rugs and carpets, as well as many other items. A full-grown Angora goat can produce up to 15.4 pound
(7 kilograms) of Mohair each year. However as the goats age, their hair thickens and thus making it less valuable.

Mohair is not the Angora's only claim to fame however. Raising Angora goats for showing is also quite popular since they require very little special attention and are smaller than most sheep and other goats at maturity of 2 years.

When determining the value of an Angora's coat, one must consider both the age and size of the goat, and of course the condition of the hair. Things to look for in an Angora goat include good size (bigger means more hair) and conformation, also check Mohair production records from the first two shearings, targeting a minimum of 12 pounds produced for bucks, 10 pounds for does.

Most Angora goat owners will shear their goat's hair twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Simple wool shears will suffice for the job.

One of the largest producers of Mohair is the United States, with over 2.4 million pounds produced in 2002. Interestingly, this number is reduced more than half from 1997 which saw production of over 5 million pounds of Mohair.

The raising goats blog is a site dedicated to raising goats and goat care run by Andrew Rocuant and his goat farm located in the beautiful Missouri Ozarks. http://raising-goats.blogspot.com

The Joy Of A Black Labrador Puppy

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 03:44

There are few things that bring greater joy to a family than bringing home a new pet especially a puppy.  However, at the same time there are also few things that cause a greater headache at times.

Thus, when considering what kind of puppy to get, a dog such as a black Labrador puppy would be a good choice for someone looking for a dog that can work well with a family, have few health problems, or provide a lifetime of companionship.  A gentle dog full of fun and ex
itement and people friendly.  A black Labrador puppy will be able to grow up and provide all of that and more for its owners, making this choice a smart one. Some Traits Of A Black Labrador PuppyAs far as bringing home a dog that will work well in a family atmosphere and allow the owner to feel safe leaving the dog alone with the children, a Labrador retriever would be a perfect match. Thankfully, for the owner that does not want to put up with too many problems, the Labrador retriever is known as one of the more mellow breeds of dogs.  It also has a great track record for working with children. These dogs are also known for being highly energetic, willing to play catch with a ball or Frisbee for long periods of time.  The exercise outside that this dog gets is what keeps it in shape and the owner must be available to play with it.  In order for this dog to remain healthy, an owner must be willing to spend time outside with it by playing the aforementioned game of catch or taking it for a walk.  A black Labrador puppy will have an added level of energy and the owner must be ready for that.As with all good things, there are some less desirable ones.  In the case of a dog like the black Labrador puppy (and all variations and ages of this breed), it will eat whatever is put in front of it.  Therefore, it is up to the owner to monitor what the dog is eating and make sure it does not overeat which would result in various health problems. An important aspect of these dogs is a black Labrador puppy is an ideal one for people with a family.  It is also a coveted dog for hunters and people who spend plenty of time outdoors.  A potential owner must weigh these traits and determine if this is the right dog because that will ultimately decide the happiness of both the owner and the dog in the long run.The choices in family pets where dogs are concerned can make deciding what kind of dog to bring home extremely difficult, but the Labrador retriever has been known to work very well as a family dog.

Dog Health Problems and Symptoms Where Do You Turn?

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 03:44

I hope the reason you're here is to be proactive, rather than having a sick dog. My heart breaks every time I see one of my dogs in pain or not feeling well. Luckily it doesn't happen too often, but when it does, I get very upset. Doing research on your dog's health problems and symptoms can help prevent the problem from getting worse. And I must stress, when in doubt, see a veterinarian. I know quite a bit about dogs and I still hesitate before going to the vet, so you're not alone.

If you have dog he
lth questions, your vet is the best person to ask. However, some common health problems in dogs can be addressed at home. Skin care for a smelly dog, for example. This can often happen due to skin allergies. Chinese Shar-pei can be bad for that, and I've been lucky so far. One of the best tips I've heard from breeders though is to not bathe her too often, as it can dry out the skin. This is perhaps quite the opposite if you have a long haired dog. I suggest visiting and joining online forums for your dog's breed, or at least dogs in general – you can get invaluable information there. For the record, when I do bathe my Shar-pei, I use an oatmeal shampoo. No skin problems in 3 years. You be the judge.

If you're looking for dog care for a mouth sore, it would depend on the kind of sore. My Shar-pei has "puppy pimples" which aren't dangerous and cause no pain to her, so I just dab some peroxide on them, and that does the trick. Of course, I got this tidbit from a breeder who got it from a vet. Please don't just blindly follow what I say – it may not be appropriate for your dog.

Easy Guide for Pet Shelters

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 03:44

There are many people who abandon their pets once the idea and novelty wear off. There are also many animals that are strays because they were born on the streets. For all of these animals pet shelters is a heaven from their misery. The pet shelters are sometimes privately owned but they give the same loving care to their charges that you can find with national pet shelters.

These various pet shelters try their very best to see that all of the animals that come to their places will eventually find a good home. Thi
however can take some time. While the animals are waiting for a home the shelter will see to their needs as best as they can.

In some cases the animals will have lost their trust in humans. These situations are dealt with calmly and patiently. The various staff at pet shelters will make sure that the animals are kept calm and quiet while the shelter veterinarian takes a look at the condition of the animal.

The various parasites and diseases that the pets may have caught are look at and then treated. Severe illnesses and medical conditions mean that the mistreated, abused or abandoned pets will be carefully cleaned by the vet staff. These sick pets will be kept in the vet center until they are ready to be placed in the regular kennels.

The healthy dogs are examined and any wounds or injuries are seen to. In addition the pets will be washed and groomed. When all of this has been achieved the pets will be given a delicious meal. This meal will have different nutrients and vitamins mixed together so that the dog has a successful chance of being adopted faster.

While the pet shelter waits for prospective families to come and see the animals there are various families who volunteer their time and energy to help these different animals get well. With their help the previously unwanted pets learn that they have the ability to function as a member of a family.

The pet shelters will allow their charges to be placed with families who care for them and who understand the responsibility that is entailed with caring for a pet. With these types of people it is very possible that different pets will be going to the right families who will care for them. For people looking for loving pets to adopt the many pet shelters that can be found all offer many different types of pets just waiting for a family.

Sniffing Out The Best Deals On Pet Supplies

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 03:44

Pet supplies can be costly, especially if you have more than one pet. When you start to think about food, supplements, toys, collars, other needed accessories, it can really add up. There are so many choices available as well, it can be difficult to know which is the best deal. There are some ways to save some money when you are buying pet supplies. You can follow these useful tips and hopefully see the results in your wallet.

Buy in Bulk

If you buy your pet food in bulk, you can really rack up the savings. This
not only applies to food, but to treats, bones, and products like cat litter. Many of these items can be found in bulk at places such as Sam's Club or Costco's.

Avoid Specialty Stores

Unless your pet requires specific food, you may want to avoid the specialty pet shop. Many times, there is a huge markup on pet food and supplies. Try some of the larger pet supply companies, such as PetSmart or Petco. Since these companies purchase items in very large quantities, they are able to offer greater discounts to their customers. There are also greater selections available for products of all different brands. Some of these stores even allow you to bring your pet with you and attend free pet training classes.

Shop Online

For medications and other pet supplies, consider shopping online. Several websites are specifically designed for these types of products. Many of these websites will also automatically mail your pet's medications when it's time for more. This helps you to avoid running out if you forget to purchase more medication. You can also check with the manufacturer's website, as you may be able to purchase some items directly. This eliminates the middle man and can save you quite a bit of money.

Look for Coupons

You can find coupons in your local newspapers and magazines. You'll also find coupons on the pet product packaging or even inside a bag of dry food. If you use these coupons at places that offer double coupons, the savings can add up quickly. Also be sure to look for online coupon websites. Bladder Stones In Labrador Retrievers

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 03:44

Obeserve your dog. If you see hints of bladder problem, act immediately...

Problems related to bladder are common in Labrador Retrievers as well as other breeds. Urinary tract stone disease happens when urinary stone, medically referred to as urolith, forms as microscopic crystals precipitate in the urinary system. This stone may vary in size and number as they form in your pet's urinary bladder.

Urinary tract stone disease is known in other names such as urolithiasis, urinary stones, ureteral stones, urinary cal
uli and urinary calculus disease. This disease has two forms- cystic calculi and urethral calculi. Cystic calculi often occurs in female dogs wherein the urinary tract bacterial infection within a bladder causes a shift in the urine pH, causing stones to form. On the other hand, urethral calculi occurs in male dogs caused by infection in rare cases. There are several types of bladder stones and these stones vary depending on their chemical make-up. The two most common are struvite and calcium oxalate. Struvite stones are mainly composed of magnesium ammonium phosphate.

There are many reasons why dogs develop bladder stones. It could be your dog's lifestyle or diet. Your dog's diet should help to maintain a low pH since struvite stones are formed with a high pH. That is why it is important to include animal-based protein diets to help maintain low pH. Genes also play an important role in the development of urinary stones. A dog with stones within a tract should not be included in breeding to prevent the spread of the disease. Another cause of this disease is bacterial infection. Bacterial infection helps in producing magnesium phosphate that eventually becomes stones.

Some dogs with bladder stones may not show any sign of the disease. But to some, the most common sign of bladder stones in Labrador Retrievers is blood in the urine. Frequent urination as well as painful urination is also common.

Stones in the bladder may not threaten your dog's health but may lead to renal failure and pyelonephritis if not treated immediately. X-rays and ultrasound is important to determine the disease and the proper treatment. Some bladder stones can be treated through oral medication. In some cases, surgery may be needed to remove the stones within the bladder. This process is referred to as cystotomy. Medical therapy may be needed in conjunction with the surgery. It can also be used by itself alone. Urinary tract stone disease could be treated easily if it is caused by diet problems. But could be hard to treat if caused by genes.

Checklist For Breeding Hermit Crabs

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 06:51

วันพฤหัสบดีที่ 21 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2552

Many people completely misunderstand hermit crabs. In a lot of cases, they are viewed as useless creations of Mother Nature that are just born to die. However, so much has now been documented about hermit crabs and their unpredictable life span that more and more hobbyists are becoming interested in having them as pets. In this article, we will explore just how hermit crabs are bred and how much control we have over their success at breeding in a controlled environment.

Most professional breeders will tell you that breeding your hermit
crab in a restricted, naturalistic environment is not an easy process. In fact, they contend that it is next to impossible. However, next to impossible leaves room for that minute chance that you will actually be successful at breeding your hermit crab. Well, crabs that is.

Your first order of business is to ensure that you have a male and a female hermit crab. If you already owned one, you may not know what sex it is as it is very difficult to tell the difference between a male and a female hermit crab. So, your best bet would be to start from scratch and get a pair from the pet shop.

Next on the list is to ensure that the created environment successfully simulates the hermit crab's natural breeding habitat. You will definitely need a saltwater tank and saltwater with the desired salinity, preferably set up outdoors. That way, you will have enough space to create the matching environment for breeding. Make sure that the temperature in the tank is 72-80F degrees as too low or high temperatures can easily make the hermit crabs weak and sick.

Also important for replicating the natural outdoor environment for hermit crabs is lighting. Because hermit crabs usually breed and mate at night, you will need to purchase enough moonlight bulbs to completely line the sides of the tank so there is always the feeling of nighttime. Hermit crabs are also accustomed to the motion in the ocean, so it is recommended that you purchase a wave-making device that can generate ocean-like waves in the tank.

Female hermit crabs lays eggs in shallow sand, and once they are hatched, the young crabs run off into the ocean, or in your case, the salt water body! Just ensure that you have enough space for all the eggs that your female hermit crab will lay - which will be a lot! The bigger the female, the larger the number of eggs she will lay. We doubt that the naturalistic environment will cause her to produce less than normal.

Once everything is in place, prepare to be entertained for the next 3 to 4 weeks as the pair of hermit crabs will mate and breed. Mating involves a lot of dancing movement, which is quite funny to observe. The female will usually lay eggs after a month, so ensure that you have calcium-rich food, brine shrimp for the new babies and several small shells that they can crawl into as soon as the come back to shore.

Although the steps highlighted are tedious and difficult, breeding your hermit crab will be a successful project as long as you have a clean environment, the right temperature, salty water and good lighting. Once the conditions are ideal, the pair of hermit crabs will behave as naturally as they would in their natural habitat.

Choosing the Right Dog for You and Your Family

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 06:51

Choosing the right dog for your family is a very important decision. Before choosing be sure to look at all of the variables such as size, breed, temperment, good with kids?

Dogs seek out people and take obvious pleasure in their company. They often fulfill a childlike role and are dependent in their owners for most of their life. This dependency works both ways and your dog becomes part of your family. It makes sense to try to match your lifestyle and preferences to the temperament and needs of the dog.

You may be
ooking for a dog with behavioral characteristics such as the ability to guard, herd, retrieve, or just sit on your lap. Other questions you'll need to ask yourself are what age? size?  sex? pure breed or not. For most pet parents, the age is considered first.

What age of dog? Of course, a puppy is delightful, especially if you've got children in the house, but there may be reasons why an older dog is better. If you're looking for a good companion right from the start, a young adult dog may be best. A puppy requires someone around all day to properly house train and to develop a good relationship. If you choose an older dog, make sure it is house-trained, a dog that has been kenneled for a long time may not be.

Size is the next important consideration. Large breeds are both expensive to buy and to feed, they need a lot of space and a lot of exercise and aren't well suited to city living in an apartment. Small and toy breeds need far less space and exercise, they eat less too! But you must take care with young children, as toy breeds bones are fine and fragile and children can accidentally hurt them seriously. Large breeds also age quicker than the smaller breeds and most don't live beyond 14 years, while the smaller breeds can live to be 20 years old.

Male or female is the next consideration, and most owners have their own preferences. Females are usually more demanding of attention, but they are easier to train and develop a more solid attachment to their owners. Male dogs are usually more consistent in their temperament, but are more difficult to train due to their independent nature. Male's may become so aggressive or wander so much that neutering is called for. This isn't always successful and can change the dog's character.

Pedigree or not? Non pedigree dogs sometimes called mongrels, have a lot in their favor. While they aren't as predictable in terms of looks and temperament, they are much less afflicted by inherited diseases than pedigree dogs and seem to avoid some of the more common ailments. Pedigree dogs can develop ailments that are common to their breed that gets passed to each new generation. You should look into the "hereditary defects" of any pedigree you are considering. Most of these ailments don't occur until the animal is old, but they will occur.

No matter what type, breed, age, size, color, or other choice of dog you make, just remember, they will all need part of your time and space. Owning a pet and becoming a good pet parent is a commitment, but it can be one of the best and happiest commitments you can make, for both of you.

Dachshund - The facts every owner of this dog breed should know

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 06:51

Learn the facts on maintaining good health, grooming needs, living conditions and more when it comes to the Dachshund

Dachshund (pronounced DAK sund) originated in Germany, during the 18th and 19th centuries, to hunt badgers. In fact, Dachshund means, 'badger dog' in German. Their unique size and shape made them the perfect hunting dog. Their small legs allowed them to burrow into the ground and their narrow bodies made it easy for them to capture prey. There are three varieties of Dachshund, Standard, which reaches an
verage height of 14-18 inches and average weight of 20 pounds; Dwarf, with an average height up to 14 inches and weight of 9 pounds; and rabbit, reaching an average height of only 12 inches and weight up to 8 pounds. Dachshund coats also come in three varieties, shorthaired, wire-haired and longhaired. The shorthaired and wire-haired Dachshunds require little care while the longhaired Dachshund does require more brushing. The coats come in a wide variety of colors as well. Bred for their fearlessness and boldness during the hunt, many Dachshunds display these characteristics. Described as curious and mischievous, they are not always easy to train and can sometimes be stubborn. Due to this personality trait, they are not always the best family pet, and should be watched carefully when around young children. Dachshunds are better with older children who can understand how to approach dogs carefully.

Dachshunds are temperamental and can be easily irritable. They do fairly well with other pets, but have been known to be jealous. Dachshunds are very active dogs that have a lot of stamina and will chase prey for a surprisingly long period of time. They can be rash when chasing prey and therefore caution should be exercised if the Dachshund is allowed to run off leash. In spite of their high energy levels, Dachshunds do well in all living situations, as long as they are exercised at least once a day. Dachshunds are prone to health problems, due largely to their unique shape. In spite of their high energy levels, they can easily become overweight, so it is important not to overfeed them. Dachshunds usually have the most trouble with their spinal column because of the length of the spinal column and the shortness of the rib cage. Obesity will worsen the problem, as it will create more strain on the back. Most Dachshunds should be discouraged from jumping and climbing stairs in order to lessen the risk of injury. Dachshunds are also prone to heart troubles, diabetes, and urinary tract diseases. There is a website that has great information on Dachshunds and most other breeds of dogs. It has details that pertain to a dog breeds health, grooming, living conditions, best food choices and more, the website is called: Dog And Cat Facts, and can be found at this url:

Labrador Training: Stop That Chewing Habit

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 06:51

Save your furniture. Stop your dog's chewing habit...

While it is normal for a Labrador to chew, it is not normal when what he is chewing is your highly priced living room carpet or your new pair of designer shoes. Chewing problem is not unusual to a Labrador or to other breeds as well. It is a common problem concerning dogs and must be corrected as soon as possible.

Dogs chew for various reasons. Of course, it is natural for dogs to chew. But that is not the sole reason for chewing. Other reason why dogs chew is
because of physical problems, feeling of pain in their teeth or because of the simple reason that they are bored. Chewing, when their teeth are causing them pain, helps ease the pain, thus your dog will just chew and chew on anything that he can find. When your dog is chewing himself, he might be affected with some health issues such as skin allergy thus causing him to itch.

I can very well remember years ago when we had just brought home a new puppy. My brother got mad when he discovered that our dog was feasting on his favorite rubber shoes. He scolded the pitiful puppy and gave him a spank in the rear. Later, we realize that maybe the puppy was bored because we were too busy with our own activities and failed to provide him with toys or something to play on.

We should always bear in mind that dogs think differently as humans do. They do things such as chewing not in the purpose of making us angry or annoyed. They just do what they think is best for them. And besides, dogs don't want their owners to get angry with them so why would they chew your furniture when they know that it will make you mad?

Whatever the reason for your dog's chewing, the problem must be addressed sooner or else it may cause other problems. When your dog is teething, the best way to stop this is to give him cold rawhide chew because this helps in easing the pain. In order for your dog not to get bored with the chew, try putting a number of chews into the freezer. Give him one on the first day and at the end of the day, put it back in the freezer. Give the other half of the chew the next day. Your dog will soon notice that you are giving him varying food chews thus he will always keep his attention on it.

It will also help if you'll provide your dog with toys. Giving something to play will keep his attention away from the furniture and other household items. So if you are leaving your Labrador behind, don't forget to provide him with many toys for him to play. That is if you don't want to spend so much for the repair of your living room couch, or worst, for buying a new one.

Is There Such Thing As A Standard In Hamster Cages?

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 06:51

When it comes to hamster cages, there really is no such thing as a "standard cage" per say; however, there is many that are of the same measurements that you might consider as the "standard" size that are made in. The main things that you really need to be thinking about are these: are the cages you are looking at going to give your hamster room to move around; are the cages you are looking at made well and will the hamster you have chosen like any of it that you are looking at.

These are some of the questions that
ou really need to be concerned about when you are looking at it. The main question that you need to be answering is about the amount of living space that the cages you are looking at will really have once you start putting in the hamster's wheel, food dish, small toys and bedding. Will there be enough room for your furry little companion to move around safely and comfortably with all of their things in the cage? If you do not think that the measurements of cages you are looking at will be large enough once your hamster and all of its belongings are in there; then you really need to start looking at cages that are larger in size than the one you currently have to give him or her that extra space.

Something else that you might want to be considering is the additional little tunnels and chambers that attack to these hamster cages to make more room for your hamster to run, climb and play. These tunnels range in size from very short (3 to 4 inches long) to 12 inches long to those tunnels that are curved to give your hamster a bit of a challenge. There are special little bubble connectors and "nesting boxes" that go at the upper end of the tunnels, while the other end attaches to the cages. These are meant to create even more space for your furry little hamster to run and climb around in and to hide in as well.

You need to really look carefully at the measurements of all of the cages that are available for sale at whatever pet store you are looking in. The smallest size of a cage that you want is 12 inches wide by 18 inches long by at least 18 inches high.

These are only the minimum measurements that you need to be looking at so that your hamster will have plenty of room to just be a hamster and play as much as they want without being cramped or hitting anything. Find out more tips about hamster care at http://hamstercare.myreferenceguide.com

Golden Retrievers - The benefits of training your Golden Retriever dog

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 08:17

วันพุธที่ 20 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2552

Training helps build a relationship between you and your dog. This relationship is built on trust, affection, and mutual respect. Training can help your Golden Retriever become your best friend and a well-mannered companion who is a joy to spend time with.

Out of all the available breeds to choose from, why did you decide to add a Golden Retriever to your family? Chances are you probably wanted a companion and a friend. You may have wanted a dog that could do things with you like run along the beach, catch tennis
alls, and hike in the mountains. To do these things, however, your Golden Retriever needs training.

Many dog owners won't admit their dog needs training. "He does everything I ask," they say. Yet when asked specific questions about their dog's behavior, the story changes. A trained dog is not going to jump on people, dash out the door each time it is opened, or raid the trash can.

Dog owners can benefit from training, too. Owners learn how to teach their dog, how to praise him, and how to motivate him to want to be good. They also learn how to prevent problem behavior from happening and how to correct the mistakes that do occur.

Dog training is much more than the traditional sit, down, stay, and come. Dog training means teaching your Golden that he is living in your house, and not his. It means that you can establish some household rules and that he is expected to follow those rules. It doesn't mean that you will be turning him into a little robot, but it will cause your dog to look at you differently. Training isn't something you do to your Golden, but rather something that the two of you do together.

How To Bath Boxer Dogs

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 08:17

Bathing is important for your dog's health. Find out how to bath your dog at home...

Boxer dogs are medium-sized dogs with double and extremely short-haired coats that appear in colors of brindle, fawn and red. Don't think that these dogs with shiny, smooth coat in varying colors are hard to groom. Boxer dogs usually clean themselves like cats thus frequent bathing may not be necessary. In fact, frequent bathing can dry their skin out. Give your Boxer a bath only when you think that he is dirty or when he smells dirt
. Better ask your vet how often Boxer dogs should be bathed. And when it's time to bath, do not worry. You never have to pay for the service of the groomer to groom your four-legged friend because bathing a dog by yourself is easy. Easy if you are aware of the simple steps needed in bathing a dog.

Prepare the needed tools first. Natural bristle brush, hard rubber brush, dog shampoo, towels and cotton balls to name a few. Before the actual bath, brush the coat completely with natural bristle brush to remove any knots or matting that they may have. If you need to cut a knot out, be careful not to cut close the dog's skin. Then place a cotton ball in each of your dog's ears, just inside the canal, to keep the water out of his ears. Place your dog in the tub filled with water almost to the top of his legs. The water should be lukewarm, not too cold nor too hot. Wet the coat thoroughly and lather with dog shampoo. Never use a human shampoo for this can strip essential oils in the dog's coat. Apply and lather shampoo along the back, belly, legs and tail. Rinse off the shampoo thoroughly, rinsing the face and the head first. You might want to use conditioner after shampoo but it is not necessary every time they are bathed.

After bathing, take him out of the tub and remove the cotton balls from his ears. Squeeze as much water out of the coat as possible then towel dry him for a few minutes. Blow dryer can be used but remember not to use a high heat setting on the hair dryer. Now that your dog is clean, you can spray him with a doggie perfume to make him sweet-smelling dog you love.

And finally, reward your dog with lots of praise for being nice as well as your self for a job well done...

Dog Food Etiquette 101

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 08:17

Before, I was wondering if I could talk to my dog because the first question that I would ask would be, "Are you happy living with me?" Then I realized that the question could be answered easily by just observing your pet as to how it behaves with regard to your presence. Being a dog lover is way too different than just being an owner because you treat your pooch not just a pet but another member of the family. Being family means that it gets to share with the stuffs the family is in with including food. Do you have that feeling wh
n you are eating something new and you want your pup to have a taste too? It is normal that you want your pup to share the same wonderful experience you have.

However this kind of thinking should have its own limits because everything that is offered too much is not good including dog food. And with regard to foods, you need not forget that your pooch is still a dog with different nutritional requirements and there are some ingredients that are not advisable to be eaten by your pet. If you only meant well without thinking about the possible consequences, be reminded of the following point. First, it is not advisable to feed your pooch with food scraps. Feed your pup before you eat your own meal so that it will no longer linger under your table wishing for more.

If you want your pet to be healthy don't feed it with commercial dog food. These contain harmful substances which can make your pooch sick in the long run. You do not save anything when you buy something commercial because the money not spent today will definitely be spent sometime in the future with a bigger chunk. Some human foods are not made to be eaten by animals including among others are chocolate, macadamia nuts, grapes, and corn. Second, train your pet not to accept dog food from strangers. There are people who give food to animals because they feel pity for it, especially when the animal is so lean and has been deprived by food for days.

However there are also those who might have a hidden agenda with regard to animals. Your pup might be a victim if it eats anything which contains poison. Start the training with your family. Tell them not to give your pup any dog food or treat at any time of the day and when you go for a walk make sure that it is not hungry so that it won't accept any foods from strangers. Third, secure your garbage bins. Dogs have that fondness for trash and they love to explore waste baskets for fun. Your pooch might eat something unwanted from the trash which can make it sick.

Be a responsible dog owner and learn that sometimes it is for your pet's advantage when you don't allow it to eat dog food scraps, accept anything from other people not even treats and explore trash.

An Iodine Deficiency In Your Pet Cockatiel Can Cause Serious Illness

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 08:17

When you own a pet cockatiel you need to watch out for any sign of an iodine deficiency in your little friend.  If you are like me,  you would do anything to keep him or her healthy and happy.

Goiter, or enlargement of the thyroid gland, shows external swelling of the bird's neck.  The growth presses against the crop and windpipe internally.  Any exertion such as flying and running will make the little bird breathless very quickly.  Breathing will be very heavy and the bird will drop to the ground with widespread wings and a pendul
us crop and neck.  He may also make a high pitched squeak or wheezing sound with each breath.  To help himself breath more easily the little bird will often rest his beak against the cage bars or on a parallel perch or tree branch.

I you don't do anything about this condition immediately your pet cockatiel will get worse.  He may start to walk in circles which is an indication of cerebral infection.  Sudden death might then follow, caused by asphyxiation, heart failure, or weakness due to insufficient intake of food.

With these serious symptoms of the thyroid, a recipe of iodine glycerine may be administered to the bird.  The proper mixture for cockatiels is one part tincture of iodine to five parts of glycerine.  As an alternative, a mixture of nine parts paraffin oil to one part iodine glycerine, administered with a plastic dropper in a corner of the beak intermittently over a period of 3 days, can usually work wonders.  If the symptoms continue to persist, see your avian veterinarian immediately.

An iodine deficiency can occur where the drinking water is deficient in iodine.  This use to be very common in captive cockatiels, Australian grass parakeets (rosellas, Bourke's, and others), lovebirds, and budgerigars.  Usually these conditions do not occur anymore due to the commercial cage sand treated with iodine.

You can make sure to give your beloved pet cockatiel small amounts of iodine in a number of items.  They are contained in cuttle bone, seashell grit, oyster shells, meat, milk, fish and eggs.  Fishmeal and cod liver oil are rich in iodine, but wheat germ is not.  A recipe of white bread soaked in milk is good treat for preventing goiter.

The Teacup Chihuahua Breed

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 21:51

วันเสาร์ที่ 16 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2552

Teacup Chihuahuas have become mighty popular lately and more and more people are curious about them. As always, it is good to know some more about the dog you might be thinking of buying beforehand. So here goes some straightforward teacup chihuahua information for you.

There is actually no official breed called Teacup Chihuahua or Tea-Cup. The name is some breeders came up with for the chihuahuas that are genetically bred to be smaller. This was probable to make t
e stand out and create more of a personal identity for these small creatures so they would become more valued. As to chihuahuas there are officially only two kinds, Long Coat and Short Coat.

The name teacup chihuahua has become so popular lately though that many are considering this to be a breed of their own. One help in their fame has of course been the celebrity Paris Hilton and her Tinker Bell dog.

These dogs are really small in size and some even discourage breeders from breeding these kinds of chihuahuas, at least the really small ones because they can easily become genetically disfunctional and create medical problems both for themselves and their owners.

The american kennel club in their standards describe as chihuahua as a compact, alert and graceful swift-moving dog that has terrier-like qualities of temperament. So beware that even though teacup chihuahuas can be small in size, their temper can something else.

Most people that buy these dogs though tend to buy them because they are easy to handle. Anytime you buy a dog it is a dog thing to dig into some study of the breed before making a purchase, that will make easier both for you and the dog in the years to come. People who buy dogs only with their eyes often tend to end up surprised or dissapointed when their pet turned out to have different characteristics than what they had expected.

A couple of words of advice if you decide to get yourself a teacup chihuahua is to invest in a coat for your dog. Many times because of their small size and lack of protecting layers of body fat they are vulnerable to cold. Another good thing is to invest in a harness rather than in a collar. This because your friend again can be somewhat fragile around the neck and is often more comfortable being out walking together with you in a good teacup chihuahua harness.

Many people appreciate their chihuahua because it is so loyal and loving. A good thing is to get them used to being with a mix of people early as they might show signs of jealousy later in life. They have also a tendency to be suspicious of people they are not familiar with. But I guess that is many times a human trait as well.

Protect Your Furniture From Scratching Cats

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 21:47

Cats scratch:

ท To remove old nail sheaths from the claws
ท To exercise and tone muscles
ท To relieve stress, frustration and boredom
ท To "warm up" for a vigorous play session
ท To mark territory

Training tips:

- Place a sisal rope scratching post in a room where the cat spends a lot of time. Cats often like to stretch and scratch when they wake up from a nap.

- To introduce the post to your cat try using catnip as a lure. (For most cats a lure is unnecessary, but fun) Rub catnip onto the si
al material and call the cat over to the post.

- Scratch your nails along the surface of the material. This will attract the cat and at the same time teach him where to scratch. After your cat begins to scratch, praise him and give him a food treat.

- Small kittens can be trained to climb the post by showing them food treats and placing the treats on the top of the post or perch.

- If your cat has already been scratching a piece of furniture, place the post directly in front of it. Temporarily cover the previously scratched areas with a few strips of double-sided carpet tape or clear double-sided tape strips that are designed for this purpose. This will help redirect your cat's scratching activities to the post. By offering a suitable scratching target you are providing a natural outlet for a normal, healthy behavior.

Smart and caring cat owners know that claws are very important to cats. Claws give the cat a sense of security, knowing that their defense system is intact. They also allow the cat to grasp and hold objects as well as establish footing for walking, running, springing, climbing and stretching.

Scratching products are designed to maximize your cat's scratching pleasure by providing an appealing target for territorial marking, exercise, and a playful warm-up.

By regularly trimming your cat's nails and offering a suitable scratching item, you are providing a natural outlet for a normal, happy and healthy behavior and you will be rewarded with a satisfied and confident companion.

Personalized Custom Dog Tags – Not Just For Soldiers Anymore

เขียนโดย Admin ที่ 02:19

In today's modern world there's hardly anyone who is not familiar with the pair of silver, oval metal tags worn by soldiers and servicemen both now and in eras past.   The common, familiar name for theses identification tags is "dog tag" because of their resemblance to the actual licensing disks worn by dogs (Recently, the army stopped calling the tags "Dog tags" and adopted the more civilized moniker  "I.D tags".   It has been suggested that some enlisted trainees in the 1990s complained that the
erm "dog tag" was offensive, but this reasoning has never been confirmed.).

While there are several dog tag formats extant around the world, it's the US Army dog tags form that we are most familiar with.   They list the surname, given name, social security number (originally service number), blood type and religion - stamped on small oval pieces of metal that are worn on a metal chain around the neck. The U.S. Army was the first branch to authorize identification tags in War Department General Order No. 204, dated December 20, 1906.  The Army altered its regulations on July 6, 1916, and now all soldiers are issued two ID tags -- one to remain with the body and the other to go to the individual responsible for the burial for record-keeping purposes.   After WWII, the US Navy Department adopted the same dog tags used by the US Army and Air Force, which led to a single size and shape to become the American standard of today.     During World War II, dog tags were first worn by civilians when soldiers often gave them to loved ones before deployment or when dating, very much like the high school or college tradition of giving a girlfriend one's letterman jacket or school ring to wear.  Also, in the 1950s, at the height of fears about a possible nuclear war with the USSR, it is rumored that all New York City public school pupils were issued dog tags to identify them in the event of war.   In recent years, the wearing of dog tags has found its way into the fashions favored by the younger generation through a style first termed as "military chic". Originally, they were worn as a part of a pseudo-style of military uniform by teens and college students wishing to put forward a tough or militaristic image, dog tags have since gained prominence in broader fashion circles, also becoming popular with celebrities like movie or rock stars and athletes. The tags can be engraved with a person's personal details, sentiments for a loved one, their beliefs or tastes, a favorite quote, or may bear the name and/or logo of a popular band or performer.    Like its military cousin, for the longest time identification tags used to aid in finding lost pets were all stamped or embossed on metal blanks which were more or less limited to a finite amount of information proscribed by the size of the embossed letters used on the tags by the machines employed for stamping.  In recent years, new materials like silicone, colored metals and plastics and methods of machine or laser engraving have given birth to a cornucopia of fun, new shapes, colors, and methods of engraving for the new materials which have rendered the old stamped tags obsolete. Gone is the day of the boxy, sometimes unevenly spaced letters borne on a silver or gold-colored metal blank which was only available in limited-sized round or oval shapes.    In addition to a varied palate of colors like red, green, orange, purple, or even reflective choices like a holographic silver, tags now come shaped like hearts, paw prints, dog or cat faces, and dog houses.  It's even possible to find shapes like a skull and crossbones, dog bones, suitcases, stars, t-shirts and the Liberty Bell.  Now, anyone can buy personalized id dog tags and can include any type of custom message or design.  New laser engraved custom dog tags engrave in a frosty white for a great eye-catching contrast of colors.  Modern dog tags or I. D. tags have clearly come a long way from their humble beginnings as a way to keep track of servicemen.
